September 24, 2019 DENNERBY SNUBS NFF, SPORTS MINISTER.

DENNERBY SNUBS NFF, SPORTS MINISTER.

Super Falcons coach, Thomas Dennerby, did not appear at a meeting expected to hold between him, officials of the Nigeria Football Federation and Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, during the weekend.

Dennerby was expected in Abuja on Saturday for a face-to-face meeting to discuss his future but the meeting did not hold.

Our correspondent gathered that the minister earlier met the NFF board members on Friday with the hope of taking a position ahead of Dennerby’s meeting.

“The outcome of the meeting with Dennerby is expected to decide whether the 60-year-old tactician will continue or quit his Super Falcons post,”

However, spokesperson of the NFF, Ademola Olajire, said the coach has an option of appearing next week Monday.

According to him, the absence of Dennerby will not affect the women’s national team performance in their forthcoming 2020 Olympics qualifiers against Ivory Coast.

“He was given two options – to come last weekend or to come next Monday. He could not make it last weekend. We are expecting him to make it next Monday.

“His absence is not affecting the team’s performance. The U-20 coaching crew are there. They are doing a very good job,” the NFF spokesperson told our correspondent on the telephone.

Few days after his absence for the meeting, there were reports that the Swede may be appointed as the India U-17 women’s team head coach.

But the coach debunked the report saying, “I am still under contract with Nigeria and currently focused on sorting out my future before thinking about what is next for me.”

FIFA AWARDS: MESSI, RAPINOE AND JURGEN KLOPP BAG PRIZES

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the best men’s player at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan as Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk missed out on the top prize.

It is the sixth time Messi has been voted the best player in the world.

Liverpool manager JurgenKlopp won the men’s coach of the year.

Klopp was nominated for the award along with two other Premier League bosses – Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino.

Liverpool beat Spurs in the Champions League final in June and came second in the Premier League in 2018-19.

The Reds have also won all six league matches at the start of 2019-20.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was also a winner as he took the best goalkeeper prize ahead of Manchester City’s Ederson and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre terStegen.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa won the fair play award after he ordered his team to allow Aston Villa to score an uncontested equaliser during their 1-1 draw in their Championship match in April.

Bielsa’s side had gone ahead controversially when the Villa players stopped as they expected the ball to be kicked out of play when Jonathan Kodjia was injured, before the Argentine intervened.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Zsori won the Puskas award for the best goal with his spectacular 93rd-minute overhead kick for Debrecen against Ferencvaros, just after he came on as a substitute for his Hungarian league debut in February.

Megan Rapinoe won the prize for the FIFA women’s award ahead of Lucy Bronze and Alex Morgan.

Akhator, whose arrival at the club was delayed due to visa issues, will be available for the final of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday in Girona.

“I am very happy to be here, “Akhator said during her unveiling ceremony.

“My delay was down to my inability to secure an entry visa problem but I am finally here and I want to play now.

“The first days here are being very good, the group has received me very well, it is a great feeling to be here. I already saw the team last season when I played in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started here.”

Abraham: Blues will vent anger on Reds

Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham, has expressed his displeasure in the wake of the Blues 1-0 loss to Valencia in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

Abraham who made his Champions League debut in the encounter failed to score despite bagging seven goals in his last five matches.

In a post-match interview with the BBC, Abraham, who is eligible to play for Nigeria, however, vowed to spur the team ahead of Sunday’s crunch clash against Liverpool.

He said, “Sunday is a test of character. We can take our anger out against Liverpool.

“It’s a massive game and both teams will be going to win. We’ll look forward to putting tonight’s defeat right.

“It’s still early doors (in the Champions League). We’re fuming we lost today. But there are still five games to go – we just have to win our next five.

“We’re obviously disappointed. We didn’t play our best football. Valencia came and stopped us playing the way we wanted so you have to give them credit.

“We’re going to have a lot of ups and downs in a season. We’ve got to move on and not dwell on it.”
