EMERY: OZIL DOES NOT DESERVE A PLACE IN THE SQUAD

Unai Emery said Mesut Ozil did not deserve his place even in a squad packed with youngsters after Arsenal beat Standard Liege in the Europa League.

Ozil, the highest-paid player in the history of the club, was once again left out of the matchday squad as Gabriel Martinelli hit a brace in a 4-0 Group F victory at home on Thursday.

The 18-year-old scored twice in three first-half minutes before laying on Dani Ceballos to score his first goal for the club, Joe Willock having already added the third.

Emery made 10 changes from the side that drew at Manchester United on Monday, with Ozil not making the matchday squad on either occasion.

The 30-year-old has had a difficult relationship with Emery since the manager’s appointment last year and his absence from the squad will lend weight to speculation that he does not have a long-term future at Arsenal

LEOW: NEUER REMAINS NUMBER ONE

Head coach Joachim Loew made it clear Friday that captain Manuel Neuer will remain Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen as an understudy, through to next June’s Euro 2020 finals.

The debate has raged in Germany over whether Ter Stegen, 27, should usurp Bayern Munich veteran Neuer, 33, in the number one shirt.

In-form Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen complained about being stuck on the bench for the 4-2 home thrashing by the Netherlands last month in a key Euro 2020 qualifier.

Bayern Munich’s outspoken president Uli Hoeness even threatened to stop their stars playing for Germany if Neuer was dropped, a notion he soon abandoned after realising such action could lead to FIFA sanctions.Loew refused to enter the debate and settled the matter emphatically when announcing his squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Argentina in Dortmund and the Euro 2020 qualifier four days later away to Estonia.

Back-up keeper Ter Stegen will play in the friendly against Argentina, who are without the suspended Lionel Messi, with Neuer returning for the important qualifier in Tallinn.

“For both games, I have decided… that Marc will play in Dortmund and ‘Manu’ (Neuer) in Tallinn. We have told both players,” said Loew.

“I have emphasised several times that Manuel Neuer is our captain, and therefore also our Number One for the time being, with the European Championship in mind – if nothing out of the ordinary happens”.

The Germans need to beat Estonia away to stay top of a tight Group C as the third-placed Netherlands are just three points behind with a game in hand while Northern Ireland is level with the Germans on 12 points.

Fraud: Again NFF officials absent in court

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday frowned at the refusal of four officials of the Nigeria Football Federation to appear in court for alleged $8.4m dollars and N4bn  fraud case.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu had on July 1, issued a warrant of arrest for the four men following their repeated refusal to appear in court to answer to the fraud charges against them.

The Federal Government had through the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property charged them with alleged misappropriation of $8.4m and N4bn belonging to the NFF.

The five officials are NFF President, Amaju Pinnick; NFF Secretary, Sunusi Mohammed; the 1st Vice-President, Seyi Akinwumi; the 2nd Vice-President, Shehu Dikko and an Executive member, Yusuff Fresh, as the 1st to 5th respondents respectively.

Pinnick was exempted from the ordered arrest due to his official roles as a member of the Confederation of African Football’s organising committee at the African Cup of Nation in Egypt.

Justice Ojukwu said their duty was to be in court when ordered as the charges against them before the court had not been cancelled.

“Nobody is bigger than the law,” she said.

Counsel to the defendants, Mohammed Katu, said the respondents were absent because the president had instructed that the Attorney General of the Federation took over the case from the office of Special Presidential Investigation Panel.

He said that the AGF had earlier called the attention of the respondents to his office and in view of the recent development he believed the AGF would do justice to prosecute the matter.

Justice Ojukwu said that the defendants had no reason to appear before any agency thereby constituting a parallel hearing in disobedience to the court.
