La Liga: Pressure mounts as Barcelona to miss Dembele ahead of classico

Ousmane Dembele will miss this season’s first Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid after he was banned for two matches by the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Wednesday.

Dembele was sent off near the end of Barca’s 4-0 win over Sevilla on Sunday for saying to referee Mateu Lahoz: “very bad, very bad”.

The RFEF disciplinary committee ruled that Dembele’s reaction constituted an “attitude of contempt or disregard for referees” and suspended the Frenchman for two matches.

It means Dembele is unavailable for Barca’s upcoming La Liga fixtures away at Eibar on October 19 and at home to Real Madrid on October 26.

Madrid and Barca are first and second in the table after eight games.

Ronald Araujo, a 20-year-old defender, and Gerard Pique both received one-match bans and will also miss the game against Eibar.

Pique picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Sevilla while Araujo was sent off for bringing down Javier Hernandez when the striker was through on goal.

Struggling AC Milan appoint Stefano Pioli as their new manager on two-year deal

By Able Monye

AC Milan have confirmed the appointment of Stefano Pioli as their new manager.

The 53-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Serie A side to replace the sacked Marco Giampaolo.

Giampaolo paid the price for Milan’s dreadful start to the season and was dismissed earlier this week after just seven games in charge. It is the shortest reign in the club’s history.

The fans of the San Siro however are clamouring for the former inter and Lazio boss to go due to lack of solid record to solve the team’s teaming problems as he has never won any title as a coach in senior football.

October 7, 2019 Doha: Okagbare must not quit now, says Alozie

Doha: Okagbare must not quit now, says Alozie

Former Nigerian hurdler, Gloria Alozie, has warned against forcing Blessing Okagbare to quit running for Nigeria.

She said that it was wrong for people to ask Okagbare to stop running for Nigeria because of her poor performances at the African Games and 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

She said Okagbare’s time was globally competitive, stating that her age should not be a reason for people to ask the athlete to retire.

She said, “I don’t think there is an age that an athlete should stop running. It is about the fitness of the athlete. She can run until any age as long as your legs are moving. Although when one is getting older, you feel some pains and have some limitations, but I don’t think age should be a yardstick. For example, Blessing has done very well in the 200m this year.

“I don’t think it is a problem yet because she didn’t run 25secs or 24secs. They have to allow her to fight for herself. If she feels that her legs are still strong and she is not injured, she is allowed to run because no law says that when you run till certain age, you should retire.”

Alozie urged Nigerians to support Okagbare in her trying times, adding, “If she feels that she is still physically strong, why should she retire? The decision to stop running has to come from her. For instance, I retired because I was not running fast again and I had injuries.

“If she is physically fit and she is running fast, she can continue. It is her decision to stop; I don’t think it is anybody’s business.”

World Championship: Brume ends Nigeria’s six-year medal search

Ese Brume won the first medal for Nigeria at the 2019 Athletics World Championship in Doha.

She won Bronze in the long jump event after leaping to a 6.91m (+0.3 wind) in her second attempt.

She lost the silver medal to Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk by an inch.

Romanchuk jumped 6.92m on her fifth attempt to move into second place, with Malaika Mihambo strengthening her grip on gold with 7.09m.

Brume’s medal came six years after Blessing Okagbare won a silver medal in the long jump and a bronze in the women’s 200m events at the 2013 edition in Moscow.

She is the third Nigerian to make it to the final of the event after Chioma Ajunwa and Okagbare.

Brume is one of the three women to have surpassed 7.00m in the world this year, jumping a new Personal Best of 7.05m at the Turkish Championships in July.
