GOAL DROUGHT IHEANACHO SAVES LEICESTER

Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho is delighted to have provided an assist and scored deep into stoppage time for Leicester City, who came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 in a pulsating Premier League game on Sunday.

The goal was Iheanacho’s third this season in three appearances. He has two goals in the Carabao Cup.

The win helped the Foxes close the gap on leaders Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

The goal was Iheanacho’s first in the EPL in 15 months. He last scored for the Foxes in their 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town in September 22, 2018.

Reacting to his performance, the former Manchester City forward said, “I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. “I knew one day it’s going to come,” Iheanacho   told  Skysports after the game. I’m happy today to get the goal and assisting Jamie.

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy also praised Iheanacho for his instant impact on the game.

Iheanacho came on for Ayoze Perez in the 62nd minute and provided an assist for Vardy’s leveller.

“We were having a few chances but they were coming from a bit further out. Kelechi caused a few more problems for the defenders, he got us into space and he got the winner which he deserves. He thoroughly deserves this,” Vardy said on Iheanacho’s influence.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers also added that he was pleased to see Iheanacho score his first of the season.

“I’m happy for him (Iheanacho) and the other guys because they don’t play as much. I’m so, so pleased.”

Rangers, Enyimba lose CAF Cup group openers

Nigerian contenders Enugu Rangers and Enyimba were both beaten by north African clubs on Sunday as the CAF Confederation Cup group phase kicked off.

Enugu coach Salisu Yusuf lost his first match in charge, with the sending off of defender Temitope Olusesi not helping as they crashed 3-1 at home against Egyptian opponents Pyramids.

Two-time African champions Enyimba conceded twice within 19 minutes of the kick-off to lose 2-0 away to Moroccan outfit Hassania Agadir, who reached the quarter-finals last season.

Nigeria assistant coach Yusuf was prescribed to Enugu after Benedict Ugwu lost his job for winning just once in the first five rounds of the domestic league.

Ibrahim Olawoyin put Rangers ahead on 29 minutes, but they battled after Olusesi was dismissed following a second yellow card just before half-time.

Mohamed Farouk equalised with a penalty nine minutes into the second half and Tunisian Amor Layouni and Islam Attia, from another spot-kick, scored in the closing stages for Pyramids.

The Cairo club, formerly called Al Assiouty Sport, was bought by Saudi Turki al Sheikh and he poured money into it, hiring foreign coaches and numerous Egyptian stars.

When ownership switched to Emirati Salem Al Shamsi, he spared no expense to strengthen the team with the aim of challenging traditional Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek, and seeking CAF titles.

French coach Sebastien Desabre says his targets are competing with Ahly and Zamalek for the league title and winning the Confederation Cup, the African equivalent of the Europa League.

Ighalo eyes Premier League return

Odion Ighalo is looking to return to the Premier League in January with a number of clubs, including his former team Watford, keen to strike a deal, TEAMtalk reveals.

The 30-year-old left Vicarage Road in 2017 in a £20m move to Changchun Yatai, having disappointed the Hornets with his desire to move on to the riches of the Chinese Super League.

The Nigeria international is currently with Shanghai Shenhua who he joined in February this year – but we can reveal he is now keen to move back to the Premier League.

We understand Shenhua would sanction a loan with a view to a permanent deal, making his prospective signing extremely appealing to a number of sides in January.

According to sources, Watford have been contacted over a potential deal to bring Ighalo back to Vicarage Road and it’s understood their hierarchy have shown an interest. Unfortunately for the Hornets, however, they are not alone in the pursuit.

Everton, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Southampton have all indicated an interest in taking Ighalo in the New Year and it will likely come down to the striker’s preference with all six clubs reportedly keen to bring him in.

Ighalo scored an impressive 39 times in 99 appearances for the Hornets between 2014 and 2017 before departing and his return would certainly go down well with supporters as the club look to pull themselves clear of the lower reaches of the Premier League.
