Badminton: BFN stranded, may miss Olympic qualifiers

The Nigerian badminton team are yet to leave the country for the 2020 Olympics qualifier, which starts on Monday (today) in Egypt, as they have not been issued visas by the Egyptian Embassy in Nigeria.

President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Dan Orbih, while speaking with our correspondent on Sunday, said their inability to secure visa from the Egyptian Embassy had already scuttled their chances of participating in the team event of the qualifiers.

The tournament serves as qualifiers for the men and women’s team event of the Thomas and Uber Cup, which is billed to hold in Denmark between May 16 and 24.

He however said if visas are gotten on Monday, the team would depart the country on Tuesday (tomorrow), to take part in the qualifiers for the single event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

MFM: Interim coach still in charge

The management of MFM FC have said interim coach Oludimu Edmund will oversee the club until further notice, after he took charge of the team in their 3-1 win over Kano Pillars in their Nigeria Professional Football League tie on Sunday.

Speaking with journalists at the end of the match, MFM Director, Davidson Adejuwon, refuted claims the club had sacked head coach Tony Bolus.

Adejuwon said the club was undergoing restructuring and would come out with their position after the process.

“At the moment, the board has decided that the decision on the issue of coach Bolus or coach Edmund is not something to be announced to the press because it still remains an internal issue. We can only address the press on it when that is sorted out,” Adejuwon said.

“At the moment, there are some issues that requires restructuring in the club and that is ongoing, it is after this that we would be able to tell the press the appropriate position of the club. During this restructuring, coach Edmund remains in charge of the club.”

There were reports in the media that the club sacked Bolus after their 1-0 home loss to Enyimba last Wednesday.

MFM however called those claims false and also said they were yet to receive any resignation letter from the embattled Bolus.

EPL: Iwobi available for Watford clash

Alex Iwobi is closing in on a return to first-team duty for Everton after taking part in training on Thursday ahead of their clash against Watford on Saturday.

The Nigeria international has been on the sidelines since December due to a hamstring injury he copped in Everton’s goalless draw at home to Arsenal.

The injury has seen him miss the last seven games for the Toffees, but he had made 20 appearances for the Blues before the set-back.

“The Nigerian, alongside Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson are back from injury and will be available for Saturday’s home tie,” Everton wrote via Twitter.

The Super Eagles forward will be hoping to get his first competitive game under the new manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

The Toffees also will be aiming to return to winning ways after failing to record a win in their last two league games.
