Real Madrid Level At Top After Win At Eibar

Real Madrid beat Eibar to record a fourth straight La Liga win and keep pace with leaders Atletico Madrid.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring with his seventh league goal of the season and then set up Luka Modric as Real scored twice in the opening 13 minutes.

Captain Kike Garcia responded for Eibar with a spectacular curled finish from the edge of the box before half-time.

Both sides had chances in a hard-fought second half, but Lucas Vazquez sealed the points for Real in injury time.

Zinedine Zidane's side moved above second-placed Real Sociedad but have played two games more than leaders Atletico, with the city rivals level on points.

Atletico are away to Real Sociedad in a key game at the top on Tuesday, with Los Blancos facing Granada a day later.

Manchester City defender Lucy Bronze has won best women's player at Fifa's 2020 awards. The 29-year-old defender is the first English player to win the Best Fifa Football Awards prize.

Bronze beat Denmark's Pernille Harder and France's Wendie Renard to claim the award at a virtual ceremony in Zurich.

Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman, who will take over from Phil Neville as England boss next year, was named the Fifa best women's coach of 2020.

Bronze said: "What a surprise, to even be nominated alongside the two other players, they are both incredible players and outstanding human beings well".

"I don't think I have the words right now to explain how I am feeling. If there is anything 2020 has taught us it is to appreciate every moment you have, never look too far ahead and live in the here and now".

"I will appreciate winning this award now more than ever and I will remember this moment for the rest of my life."

Lyon and France's Sarah Bouhaddi won the other individual award on offer, being voted the best Fifa women's goalkeeper.

December 18, 2020 Russia Banned From Tokyo Olympics After Cas Ruling

Russia Banned From Tokyo Olympics After Cas Ruling

Russia's ban from all major sporting events after a doping scandal has been cut to two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The ban still prevents Russia from competing in the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, set to be held next year, and football's 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Russia was initially given a four-year ban by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Cas said the reduction of the ban should not be seen "as any validation" of Russia's conduct.

The ban will now run until 16 December 2022, meaning Russia is also banned from competing at the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February.

World Athletics said it will decide in March 2021 whether to allow Russian athletes who can prove they are clean to compete as neutral athletes in international athletics competitions.

The governing body has previously said a maximum of 10 Russian track and field athletes will be allowed to compete under a neutral flag at the Tokyo Games, which were postponed to July 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Russia will be allowed to play at next year's delayed Euro 2020 tournament because European football's governing body Uefa is not defined as a "major event organisation" with regards to rulings on anti-doping breaches.
