Uruguay Players Want Cavani Ban Overturned

Uruguay's players' union has called on the Football Association to overturn Edinson Cavani's three-match ban.

The Manchester United striker was fined $100,000 and banned for an Instagram post containing a Spanish word that is offensive in some contexts.

Luis Suarez and Diego Godin have both shared a statement by their national players' union that calls the punishment a "discriminatory" act.

Uruguay's Football Association (AUF) also wants the ban reviewed.

Godin, Uruguay's captain, and striker Suarez shared on Twitter a letter of support for their international team-mate Cavani, written by the Uruguayan Football Players' Association (AFU).

The letter, signed by professional and amateur players from the South American country, described the FA's sanctioning of Cavani as an act "against the culture and way of life of the Uruguayan people".

The Football Association said it charged Cavani - and subsequently punished him - following a "full and thorough" investigation, which also "involved a language expert witness".

The FA said the post was alleged to be "insulting and/or abusive and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute".

It was also alleged "that the comment constitutes an aggravated breach" which "included reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin".

Cavani accepted the FA's charge, with United saying the Uruguayan chose not to contest it "out of respect for, and solidarity with" the governing body and football's fight against racism.

Cavani sent the message after scoring a winner at southampton on 29 November. He subsequently deleted the post and apologised when the meaning that could be attached was pointed out

Champions Liverpool Stumble At Southampton

Liverpool's Premier League title defence suffered a setback as they fell to defeat at Southampton on Monday.

Danny Ings' superb second-minute lob over Reds goalkeeper Alisson, from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick, settled the contest against his former club.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side, for whom this was a second league loss of the season, remain top of the table on goal difference but have taken only two points from the past nine available.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City will leapfrog the reigning champions if they win their games in hand.

Southampton's first win in five Premier League games sees them climb to sixth and brought an emotional response from manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who sank to his knees to celebrate taking points against a side led by Klopp for the first time.

Season Opening Australian GP Set To Be Postponed

The Formula 1 2021 season is unlikely to start with the Australian GP as planned, with the scheduled opening race set to be postponed.

After a disrupted 2020 campaign because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Albert Park's Australian GP  which was cancelled last year was due to kick off a record 23-race 2021 season on March 21.

But the race is now set to be postponed until later in the year due to strict new quarantine restrictions in Melbourne.

The Bahrain GP, set for March 28, is poised to replace Australia as the season-opener.

Melbourne is preparing to host its first major international event in almost a year in February with the Australian Open tennis tournament, and the Victorian government has made a 14-day quarantine mandatory for all personnel.

It is believed F1 would be subject to the same rules - and a Grand Prix would be unviable in those circumstances.

Bayern Ease To Comeback Victory Against Mainz

Bayern Munich scored five second-half goals as they came from 2-0 down to beat struggling Mainz and go top of the Bundesliga by two points.

Jonathan Burkardt and Alexander Hack struck before half-time to shock the defending champions.

It took just 10 second-half minutes for Bayern to draw level thanks to Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane.

Substitute Niklas Sule also scored before Robert Lewandowski netted twice, the first from the penalty spot.

Bayern, who fell behind for the eighth straight game, replaced RB Leipzig - 1-0 winners at Stuttgart on Saturday - at the top of the table, while Mainz remain second from bottom.

Victory was Bayern's third in succession and extended their unbeaten run to 12 games.
