Pochettino Wins First Trophy Of Managerial Career As PSG Beat Marseille In French Super Cup

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager MAURICIO POCHETTINO has won the first trophy of his managerial career after Paris St-Germain beat Marseille 2-1 to win the French Super Cup in Lens.

MAURO ICARDI opened the scoring for the Parisiens after tapping in from close range and also won a penalty which NEYMAR scored for the second, while Marseille’s consolation goal was scored by DMITRI PAYET via a clever flick.

POCHETTINO who failed to win anything  in almost four years at Espanyol, 16 months at Southampton and five and a half years with Spurs haas now broken his trophy dock in his third game in charge of PSG after being appointed earlier this month.

JOEL EMBIID scored an impressive 45 points and also notched 16 rebounds, five steals and four assists for the Philadelphia 76ers as they claimed an overtime, 137-134 victory over the Miami Heat.

Victory saw the Sixers end their three-game losing streak. Elsewhere, LEBRON JAMES scored 22 of his 26 points in the first half as the Los Angeles Lakers eased past the Houston Rockets 117-100 for their second thrashing in as many games.

The Brooklyn Nets overcame an 18-point deficit to beat the Denver Nuggets 122-116 with KEVIN DURANT finishing with 34 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds.

The Utah Jazz, second in the Western Conference, cruised past the Cleveland Cavaliers in a 117-87 win, with DONOVAN MITCHELL and JORDAN CLARKSON scoring 27 and 21 points respectively. And in Tuesday's late game, the Indiana Pacers beat the Golden State Warriors 104-95 to win for the first time in three games

LMC To Probe Clubs For Flouting Covid-19 Protocols

The League Management Company has said it will investigate the flouting of COVID-19 protocols by Nigeria Professional Football League clubs after pockets of fans were seen at some match venues last weekend.

Fans were alleged allowed into the Agege Stadium for the match between MFM and Sunshine Stars and the Enyimba Stadium, Aba, during the tie between Enyimba and Wikki Tourists.

This defied the directive of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, which banned fans from stadiums last year.

LMC Chief Operating Officer, SALIHU ABUBAKAR, said the league body would verify and sanction the erring clubs appropriately.

SALIHU also said the league body was yet to take a decision on Dakkada, after the club reportedly did not carry out COVID-19 tests on their players and officials before their league game against Akwa United December 28, 2019.

Dakkada reportedly also did not conduct COVID-19 tests on their players and backroom staff, thus flouting the directive of the Nigeria Football Federation that the tests were mandatory for all the clubs before each game.

Sheffield United Beat Newcastle For First Win Of The Season

Sheffield United finally gained their first Premier League win of the season in their 18th game as they beat 10-man Newcastle United at Bramall Lane.

Newcastle's RYAN FRASER was sent off late on in the first half after he picked up two bookings in a three-minute spell following fouls on JOHN FLECK and DAVID MCGOLDRICK.

With a little over 15 minutes remaining the Blades were awarded a penalty when Federico Fernandez handled the ball, substitute Billy Sharp sent goalkeeper KARL DARLOW the wrong way from the spot for what proved the only goal of the game.

The victory ended a club record run of 20 league matches without a win since the Blades beat Chelsea 3-0 on 11 July, before ending the 2019-20 season with three successive defeats.

The Blades remain bottom of the table but are now on five points, three behind 19th-placed West Brom and nine adrift of Brighton in 17th, having played a game more than both.
