January 19, 2021 Keiran Trippier’s Ban Appeal Rejected By FIFA

Keiran Trippier’s Ban Appeal Rejected By FIFA

Kieran Trippier's 10-week ban for breaking betting rules applies globally, FIFA ruled as it dismissed an appeal by his club, Atletico Madrid.

He was banned and fined £70,000 after being found to have broken betting rules.

The England full-back was suspended by the Football Association in December, but the ban was provisionally lifted in January after Atletico appealed.

The Spaniards argued the FA could not ban a player not active in its league.

But FIFA backed the decision, ruling "sanctions imposed on the player by the English FA to have worldwide effect".

Atletico are now taking their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Trippier's ban, which started on 21 December, will now resume up to and including 28 February, but if CAS agree to hear the case he will be free to keep playing until a decision is made.

His suspension cannot extend beyond 28 February, irrespective of what CAS decides.

As it stands, following the decision from FIFA, Trippier will miss the first leg of Atletico's Champions League last-16 tie with Chelsea on 23 February, but could return for the second leg on 17 March.

Murray’s Australia Open In Doubt After Positive Covid19 Test

Former world number one Andy Murray's participation at the Australian Open is in doubt after the Briton tested positive for coronavirus. The 33-year-old Scot was set to fly out to Melbourne on a chartered flight arriving there over the next 36 hours. Instead he remains in quarantine and isolating at home in London. Murray, who is said to be in good health, remains hopeful he will be allowed to travel safely at a later date and compete as planned.

The five-time Australian Open runner-up pulled out of last week's ATP event in Delray Beach as he wanted to "minimize the risks" of catching a transatlantic flight to Florida.
The Australian Open will start on 8 February at Melbourne Park, three weeks later than usual, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Players must test negative before taking one of the 15 chartered flights - which have been put on by tournament organizers and will operate at 25% capacity - to Australia. Once they have arrived, they will have to pass a series of Covid19 tests during a 14-day quarantine in Melbourne before the Grand Slam.

At 123rd in the world, Murray is ranked too low to gain direct entry into the tournament so the three-time Grand Slam champion has been given a wildcard.
