Australian Open Players Come Out Of Quarantine

Australian Open tennis players have begun to leave hotel quarantine after completing their 14-day isolation, about a week before the event starts.

By Sunday, about 500 players will have been released from hotels in Melbourne and Adelaide, organizers said.

High-profile stars Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were among those allowed out on Friday.

Players have quarantined because of the Australian government's Covid-19 rules for anyone entering the country.

In early January, more than 1,700 players, staff and others tied to the Grand Slam were flown into Australia on chartered flights. The tournament begins on 8 February.

Unlike other returning travelers who stay full-time in hotel rooms, players were allowed out of their rooms for five hours a day to practice on court and exercise.

A smaller group of 72 players were fully confined to their rooms in Melbourne, however, after coronavirus cases were discovered on their flights.

Eight cases have been linked to the event so far, including Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa.

The quarantine policy had prompted criticism from several players who were concerned about how it would impact their preparation.

Man Utd. Players Axel Tuanzebe And Anthony Martial Suffer Racial Abuse

Manchester United say they are "disgusted" after Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial were racially abused on social media by "mindless idiots" after Wednesday's loss to Sheffield United.

Both players started the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Old Trafford.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand called it a "disgrace", adding: "These ignorant idiots need to be exposed so everyone can see them for what they are."

In a statement, the club said: "Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night's game.

Anti-racism charity Kick it Out said the continued abuse of players on social media is "completely unacceptable" and reiterated its stance that those responsible for online hate must face "real-life consequences".

The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), the players' union, has encouraged Tuanzebe and Martial - as well as any other player targeted by racial abuse - to "press charges".

Blades Stun Man Utd At Old Trafford

Sheffield United pulled off one of the shocks of the season as title-chasing Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Chris Wilder's improving side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side had the chance to leapfrog Manchester City back into top spot but froze under the pressure against bottom-of-the-league Blades, who had only won once in the Premier League this season.

Kean Bryan headed home the opener when taking advantage of some questionable goalkeeping from David de Gea but former Sheffield United man Harry Maguire scored his first goal at Old Trafford to level it up.

A late siege on the Sheffield United goal was expected but Chris Wilder's substitution to bring on Oliver Burke paid off as he struck the winner via a big deflection off Axel Tuanzebe.

The result leaves Manchester United a point behind City, who have a game in hand, while the great escape could be on for Wilder's boys. They are 10 points from safety.

Rory Mcilroy Relishing Torrey Pines Return

Rory McIlroy is looking forward to an early opportunity to test himself on this year's US Open venue when he returns to the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The four-time major champion has posted top-five finishes in his two previous visits to the California course, claiming a share of fifth on his debut in 2019 and ending tied-third in last year's event.

McIlroy remains without a victory since November 2019 and failed to convert a final-round lead on the European Tour in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, with the Northern Irishman now making the long trip to the West Coast to start a run of six PGA Tour starts over the next seven weeks.

"I didn't really start playing this event until a little later on in my career, but it [Torrey Pines] has been a good venue for me," McIlroy said. "Also, looking ahead to June and the U.S. Open here as well, it will be nice to at least have it fresh in the memory for then, too.

"I think it's a wonderful layout for a major championship. To have a U.S. Open here, it stands up to basically the most elite level of golf that we play, the toughest test we face all year for the most part.

McIlroy's appearance is his first on the PGA Tour since a tied-fifth finish at the Masters in November, with the world No 7 now looking to make a strong start to his busy 2021 schedule.
