Patrick Reed Cruises To Five Shot Victory At Torrey Pines

American Patrick Reed claimed his ninth career title by cruising to a five-shot triumph in the Farmers Insurance Open.

The 30-year-old began the day tied for the lead at 10 under with Mexico's Carlos Ortiz but eased to victory with a four-under 68 at Torrey Pines.

Reed benefitted from a controversial free drop on the 10th on Saturday but there were no signs of the incident affecting him on the final day.

"I hung in there after everything that transpired yesterday," he said.

"I felt mentally strong throughout the round," added the former Masters champion.

"When I spoke to the rules officials they said I did everything I could. I felt great throughout the day. I was able to go out there and shoot a low number and get the job done."

Ortiz had a tough day, carding a five-over final round to finish in 19th place, and it was left to rising Norwegian star Viktor Hovland to apply a little pressure on Reed.

Hovland made four birdies in six holes to reach the turn in 32 though, which meant Reed had to play solidly on the back nine in California to secure the title.

He duly did so, making eight straight birdies and then a birdie at the last to put the gloss on a comfortable victory, while Hovland fell away with bogeys at the 14th, 15th and then on 17 when he missed a putt of barely two feet.

Spain's Jon Rahm carded a disappointing closing 72 to finish tied seventh while former Open champion Francesco Molinari of Italy continued his return to form with a closing 66 to share 10th.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy came home in three over to finish in 16th place on six under par.

February 1, 2021 Messi Scores 650th Barcelona Goal In Victory Against Bilbao

Messi Scores 650th Barcelona Goal In Victory Against Bilbao

Lionel Messi scored his 650th goal for Barcelona with a wonderful free-kick as they beat Athletic Bilbao to move up to second in La Liga.

Athletic had a five-man wall, a player lying behind the wall and another on the line but Messi still managed to curl the ball into the top corner - his 49th free-kick goal for the club.

Athletic were level when Jordi Alba turned a cross into his own net.

But Antoine Griezmann slammed in the winner from Oscar Mingueza's pass.

Barcelona move above Real Madrid on goal difference, but the rivals both sit 10 points behind Atletico Madrid - who have a game in hand on both sides and who defeated Cadiz earlier in the day.

Ronald Koeman's side seem to be over their dreadful start to the season with eight wins and two draws in their past 10 La Liga games.

Barcelona's day ended better than it started, with the club denying leaking details of Messi's contract to El Mundo.

The club plan legal action after the Spanish newspaper published details of his £492m contract.

Suarez Navarro Keen On Olympics Return After Cancer Treatment

Former world number six Carla Suarez Navarro says she is responding "very well" to cancer treatment and "dreams" of returning for one last major event - this year's Tokyo Olympics.

The Spaniard, 32, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma last year.

Suarez Navarro posted on Twitter on Monday that she was having her last chemotherapy session.

"I don't want people to remember me in a hospital bed, so I'd like to go again into a big tournament," she said.

"It would be a dream to do that - an Olympic Games to say bye to my tennis family and also all my tennis fans."

Suarez Navarro, who had previously planned to retire in 2020, said she has discussed teaming up with Garbine Muguruza, her doubles partner at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The seven-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist says her focus remains on treatment and recovering physically, but said she began to reconsider her plans to retire after doctors encouraged her to continue to play tennis.

Suarez Navarro, who is still ranked 85 in the world despite last playing in February 2020, returned to the court for the first time in December to practice with Italy's former world number five Sara Errani in Barcelona.

Harry Kane Out For Some Weeks After Ankle Injury

Tottenham's Harry Kane could be out for a "few weeks" after injuring both ankles in the Premier League defeat by Liverpool says his boss Jose Mourinho.

Kane, 27, needed treatment on his left ankle after landing awkwardly following a challenge with Jordan Henderson.

The England captain also hurt his right ankle in an earlier challenge with Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The striker, who has a history of ankle issues, continued before being replaced by Erik Lamela at half-time.

Kane has spent considerable time on the sidelines with a number of serious ankle injuries in recent seasons.

The striker was ruled out for two significant spells in the second half of the 2018-19 season, missing seven games when he damaged ligaments in his left ankle in January 2019 and then nine more matches with a lateral ligament injury sustained in April.

In 2017-18 he missed a month with a similar injury to the right ankle, and endured separate absences of six and four weeks during the 2016-17 campaign.
