Palace Secure Comeback Win Over Newcastle

Crystal Palace recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since September as they kept an attack-minded Newcastle at bay at St James' Park.

The Magpies had a handful of chances to add to the second-minute strike from Jonjo Shelvey, while Roy Hodgson's side made the most of their opportunities, turning the match around in a four-minute spell courtesy of goals from Jairo Riedewald and Gary Cahill.

Riedewald's effort trumped Shelvey's half-volley, when his 20-yard rocket took a slight deflection off Ciaran Clark in beating keeper Karl Darlow. And then in the 25th minute 35-year-old Cahill leapt highest to flick Eberechi Eze's corner delivery past the reach of the Magpies keeper. In doing so, the former Chelsea defender became the club's oldest scorer in the competition.

Andros Townsend should have made it 3-1 in stoppage time, but almost inexplicably struck his effort high and wide from four yards.

The visiting backline was busier of the two defenses with Vicente Guaita producing a great instinctive block to deny Ryan Fraser and making another save to deny the Scot.

Victory sees Palace move level on 29 points with 12th place Southampton, while Newcastle remain in 16th and eight points above the drop-zone.

Ronaldo Double Earns Juventus First Leg Advantage In Coppa Italia

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus came from behind to win the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final at Inter Milan.

Argentine forward Lautaro Martinez had put Inter in front, steering a shot past Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon on his 1,100th senior appearance.

However, Ashley Young's foul on Juan Cuadrado allowed Ronaldo to level with a penalty.

The Portuguese forward then capitalised on a defensive mistake for his second.

That rounded off the scoring in a bad-tempered encounter, which saw nine players booked as Andrea Pirlo's side earned revenge for their 2-0 Serie A defeat against Inter in January.

Juventus, 13-time winners of the competition, host the second leg in Turin on Tuesday, 9 February.

Man Utd Put Nine Past Southampton In Record-Equalling Win

Manchester United equaled the Premier League record by putting nine goals past nine-man Southampton - the second time Saints have lost 9-0 in as many seasons.

A red card for Saints' Alexandre Jankewitz after only two minutes triggered a complete collapse for the visitors, who were on the end of the same scoreline against Leicester City in October 2019.

It is only the third time a team has lost 9-0 in the Premier League, with United also beating Ipswich Town by that margin in 1995.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka opened the scoring with his first goal at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani also found the net either side of a Jan Bednarek own goal before the break.

After a fairly drab start to the second half, United cut loose, scoring five times in the final 21 minutes.

Anthony Martial ended an eight-match goal drought before Scott McTominay drove home from the edge of the area.

Then, after Bednarek became the second Saints player to be sent off - bringing down Martial to allow Bruno Fernandes the chance to score from the penalty spot on 87 minutes - the French forward netted his second, before Dan James wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time.

It was a stunning ending as United almost matched their club record 10-0 victory over Anderlecht in 1956.

Access Bank Postpones Lagos City Marathon

This year’s edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon earlier slated for February 13, has now been shifted till April 10, the organisers disclosed yesterday.

Last week, the Nilayo Sports Management Chief Executive Officer, Bukola Olopade, stated that the number of athletes taking part in the 2021 event was reduced from its usual 100,000 runners to 300 to stay within the regulatory procedure of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on why it was postponed, Olopade stated that even though Lagos State government, the sponsors and the organizers were fully ready, there was the need to move the event forward to April 10 due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Olopade added: “We are not going to increase the number from 300 runners even though a lot of foreign athletes want to use the silver label Access Bank Lagos City marathon to cement their qualification for the Tokyo Olympics.

“As we speak, this Lagos city marathon has been listed by World Athletics as qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics. Even the April 10 date is already on their website,” Olopade said, adding that the 300 tickets available for the 2021 edition would be distributed to athletes both from the country and those coming from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, United Kingdom, USA and other countries.

“The 2021 Lagos City Marathon would be exclusive for the 42km race. The 10km race and the wheelchair race won’t be part of this year’s edition. The health of the athletes and everyone, who will attend the event, is very important to us. The absence of the 10km race won’t take away the glamour of the event.”

“Lagos State has become a sports tourist attraction because of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. We are always happy to support and make sure that the marathon happens and get better every year. We are looking forward to the April 10 date to show to the world that Lagos is a destination place to visit,” Olopade stated.
