Man Utd Pip West Ham To Reach FA Cup Quarter Final

Scott McTominay's extra-time goal finally saw off dogged West Ham as Manchester United's 1-0 win put them through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

McTominay fired home powerfully from Marcus Rashford's tee-up seven minutes into the additional 30, after United had found themselves frustrated by the visitors for the opening 90.

They nearly found a breakthrough in a first half where the Hammers set out to frustrate their hosts, with Victor Lindelof's header kept out by a superb one-handed Lukasz Fabianski save shortly before the half-hour.

The visitors improved after half-time although Manchester United still enjoyed the best chance, with Marcus Rashford denied by another point-blank Fabianski stop, before Craig Dawson almost won the tie with a glancing header from a corner late on - and in extra-time, McTominay's finish would make all the difference.

Lewandowski Double Fires Bayern Into World Club Cup Final

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Bayern Munich progressed to the Fifa Club World Cup final by beating Al Ahly in Qatar.

The German champions dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead when Lewandowski slotted in.

Egyptian side Al Ahly competed well after the break, with their pace on the counter a concern for Bayern.

But Lewandowski made sure of the win with a late header for his 29th goal in 27 appearances this season.

Bayern Munich will play Mexican side Tigres in the final on Thursday, 11 February.

Sofia Kenin Begins Australian Open Title Defense With Win

Defending champion Sofia Kenin made a nervous start to her Australian Open defence, while former winner Victoria Azarenka was knocked out after seeming to struggle with her breathing.

American Kenin was in tears before a 7-5 6-4 win over Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis.

"I felt a little bit [of] pressure," the 22-year-old said. "I obviously am tight. I wasn't there 100% mentally."

Meanwhile, Azarenka needed an inhaler in a 7-5 6-4 defeat by Jessica Pegula.

The Belarusian, who won the title in 2012 and 2013 and was a US Open finalist in September, was one of the 72 players who went through a 'hard' quarantine after arriving in Australia where she was confined to a hotel room for 14 days.

The 12th seed had played only one match since coming out of quarantine, having pulled out of a warm-up event last week with a lower-back issue.

Azarenka declined to discuss the medical issue after the match but said of her build-up: "Was that the best preparation for me? No.

"The biggest impact for me personally has been not being able to have fresh air. That really took a toll.

"I don't know how to prepare after two weeks in quarantine. I don't have a blueprint how to prepare. It's all about trying to figure it out and I didn't figure it out. Not this time."

Kenin is joined in the next round by Garbine Muguruza, whom she beat in last year's final, after the Spaniard's comfortable 6-4 6-0 win over Margarita Gasparyan, while 11th seed Belinda Bencic and former semi-finalist Elise Mertens also advanced.

American 16-year-old Coco Gauff, who had a stunning run to the fourth round here last year, won her opener against Jil Teichmann 6-3 6-2 to set up a meeting with Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina, who beat Marie Bouzkova 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

Celta Vigo Hold Atletico Madrid Despite Suarez Double

Luis Suarez scored twice but it was not enough to earn victory for La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid as they were held to a draw by Celta Vigo.

Santi Mina headed the visitors into the lead before Suarez tucked in an equalizer just before the break.

The Uruguay forward then put Atletico ahead in the second half when he drove home Renan Lodi's cross.

That looked set to give Atletico a 17th league win of the season but Facundo Ferreyra equalized in the 89th minute.

The draw means Atletico, who have lost only one league game this season, are eight points clear of second-placed Barcelona with a game in hand over Ronald Koeman's side.

Suarez, who left Barcelona for Atletico last summer, is the top scorer in La Liga with 16 goals.
