West Brom Hold Man Utd To Draw At Hawthorns

Bruno Fernandes' stunning volley salvaged a point for Manchester United at struggling West Brom, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side lost further ground in the Premier League title race.

United moved back above Leicester in second place, but are now seven points behind leaders Manchester City, who also have a game in hand.

The Baggies took a shock lead after just 83 seconds as on-loan striker Mbaye Diagne outmuscled Victor Lindelof to head in from Conor Gallagher's cross.

United were finding it difficult to make inroads in a lacklustre opening period until Fernandes hooked Luke Shaw's cross into the top corner with his weaker left foot.

The visitors improved in the second half, Mason Greenwood testing Sam Johnstone with a low strike and Scott McTominay seeing his follow up cleared off the line.

With time running out, skipper Harry Maguire leapt to send his header towards the top corner, but Johnstone tipped the effort against the post to deny United an injury-time winner.

Sam Allardyce's side could have won it themselves late on, but Diagne struck his effort over the crossbar from six yards out.

Though they claimed a draw, West Brom remain in deep trouble at the wrong end of the table, second from bottom and 12 points from safety.

Nadal, Medvedev Cruise In Melbourne

Former champion Rafael Nadal and fourth seed Daniil Medvedev both cruised into the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Spaniard Nadal, the 2009 winner and number two seed, gained a routine 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over Italy's 16th seed Fabio Fognini at Melbourne Park.

Medvedev beat American world number 192 Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 6-2 6-3 to claim his 18th consecutive victory.

It means there are three Russians in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in the Open era.

"I want more all the time, but step by step, so this is amazing," said Medvedev, who only needed one hour and 29 minutes to defeat McDonald on Margaret Court Arena.

Medvedev will face compatriot Andrey Rublev in the last eight. Seventh seed Rublev was leading 6-2 7-6 (7-3) when Norwegian opponent Casper Ruud retired with an injury.

Aslan Karatasev, who had to win three matches in the qualifying event in Doha, won on Sunday as his dream Grand Slam debut continued.

No Russian male has won a Grand Slam since Marat Safin in Melbourne in 2005.

Bayern Munich Sign Dayot Upamecano From Leipzig

Bayern Munich have signed RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, with the Frenchman set to join the German champions on 1 July.

RB Leipzig say Bayern paid Upamecano's buy-out clause, worth a reported 42.5m euros (£38m).

Upamecano, 22, has agreed a five-year deal with Bayern.

"We're convinced that Dayot will be a very important member of our team in the coming years," said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Upamecano, who had been linked to Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, has been at Leipzig four and a half years and played 139 games.

European and world champions Bayern are four points clear of second-placed Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

Leipzig face Liverpool in the Champions League last 16, with the first leg taking place in Budapest on Tuesday.

Fans Barred From Australian Open As Victoria Enters Lockdown

The Australian state of Victoria will enter lockdown for a third time in a bid to suppress an outbreak of the UK strain of coronavirus.

Officials this week found 13 cases stemming from a quarantine worker who became infected at a Melbourne hotel.

The lockdown will begin on Friday midnight and end on Wednesday.

However, the government has said the Australian Open tennis tournament would continue in the state's capital, Melbourne.

Spectators will be banned from attending the event from Saturday, which had previously allowed up to 30,000 visitors a day. Tickets will be refunded, tournament director Craig Tiley said.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the current outbreak was not linked to the quarantine hotels used by the tennis players.
