Chelsea Beat Newcastle To Go Fourth

Timo Werner scored and assisted as he ended a 14-game goal drought to help Chelsea to victory over Newcastle in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

Werner's cross rebounded out to Olivier Giroud to net Chelsea's opener in the first half, after the France striker replaced the injured Tammy Abraham.

Summer signing Werner then made it 2-0 eight minutes later, scrambling in a flick-on at the back post.

Victory sees Chelsea move back up to fourth place, ahead of West Ham.

The Hammers, who comfortably beat Sheffield United earlier on Monday night, are level on points with Chelsea but both sides sit above defending champions Liverpool as competition for Champions League places heats up.

Naomi Osaka Cruises Into Australian Open Semi-Finals

Naomi Osaka cruised past Hsieh Su-wei in just 66 minutes to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The Japanese third seed, who won the second of her three Grand Slam titles at Melbourne Park in 2019, beat the Taiwanese 6-2 6-2.

Osaka will face either Serena Williams or Simona Halep - who are both former Grand Slam champions - for a place in Saturday's final.

"Every time I play her, it is always such a battle," Osaka said.

Osaka has had a difficult draw but the 23-year-old has dropped just one set en route to the last four.

She saved two match points to beat two-time major winner Garbine Muguruza in the quarter-finals and looked refreshed against Hseih.

After saving a break point in the opening game of the match, Osaka chased down Hseih's slices and shots to take an early break in the first set.

She hit 24 winners, compared to 14 unforced errors, and amassed 12 break points on the Hseih serve, converting four.

Osaka beat Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2018, but she has won just one of her previous four matches against Halep.

Desire Oparanozie Slams NFF Over Her Exclusion From Super Falcons Squad To Play Turkish Women’s Cup

Nigerian footballer, Desire Oparanozie has slammed the Nigeria Football Federation following her exclusion from the Super Falcons squad that will feature at the Turkish Women’s Cup, to start today, Monday, February 15.

On Thursday last week, the NFF released a 23-man list for the competition, with Oparanozie a shock exclusion despite her form this season.

Reports emerged that she was excluded because of her role inciting protests amongst her teammates at the 2019 Women's World Cup in France.

Reacting to the reports, NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, in a recent interview with BBC, said it had nothing to do with the role she played in the protest.
“Oparanozie is still part of the team’s plans, and her non-inclusion has nothing to do with that protest in France because she was not the only one involved.

“Selection of players is predominantly the prerogative of the coaches and not the NFF.

“She remains an important member of the women’s national side. I think she will just have to keep working on her game and, if she gets the opportunity, then push for consistent selection.”

Oparanozie has now reacted to what Olajide said. Taking to her Twitter handle she wrote;

“Work on my game and push for consistent selection. Those ones who’s been without a club for over a year now, how many of their games did they work on over the past one year to merit their inclusion? When we’re spoilt for choice. Look for another lie.”

Real Madrid Beat Valencia To Move To Second

Karim Benzema scored his 17th goal of the season as Real Madrid claimed a comfortable win over Valencia to return to second in La Liga.

The hosts dominated the first half and deservedly took an early lead when Benzema curled in a precise finish.

Toni Kroos then added a second before the break as he finished off a neat move.

Valencia did not manage a shot on goal until the second half with Maxi Gomez testing Thibaut Courtois from distance.

The win means Real Madrid are five points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, who have two games in hand.
