March 22, 2025 Boxing Icon George Foreman Passes Away at 76

Boxing Icon George Foreman Passes Away at 76

Former heavyweight champion George Foreman, renowned for his stunning comeback at age 45, has died at 76.

His family announced his passing in an Instagram post, stating, “With profound sorrow, we share the loss of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully left us on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.”

Foreman’s impact on boxing is legendary. Known for his devastating punching power, he first won the heavyweight title in 1973 by overpowering Joe Frazier in just two rounds. However, he lost the belt the following year in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” against Muhammad Ali, who used his rope-a-dope strategy to wear Foreman down before securing an eighth-round knockout.

Two decades later, a transformed Foreman—older, heavier, yet still formidable—pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. In 1994, at age 45, he knocked out Michael Moorer to become the oldest heavyweight champion ever, securing his legacy as one of boxing’s all-time greats.

Foreman’s journey extended beyond the ring. Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, he grew up in Houston’s tough Fifth Ward, raised by a single mother alongside six siblings. Struggling in his youth, he dropped out of school and got involved in street crime before turning his life around through the Job Corps, part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” programs.

“George’s journey from the streets of Fifth Ward to boxing and business success was an inspiration,” said Houston Mayor John Whitmire. “He never forgot where he came from … Houston will forever be proud to call George Foreman one of our own.”

Encouraged to take up boxing through the Job Corps, Foreman quickly excelled. At 19, he won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, then turned professional and won his first 37 fights, culminating in his title victory over Frazier in 1973.

His crushing defeat to Ali in 1974 left a lasting impact. After a brief return to boxing, he retired in 1977 to become an ordained minister, dedicating years to his faith and community, including founding a youth center in Texas.

In 1987, Foreman surprised the world by announcing a comeback at age 38, weighing 315 pounds (143 kg). Despite losing a title fight to Evander Holyfield in 1991, he persevered and, in 1994, reclaimed the heavyweight championship by defeating Moorer. He finally retired in 1997 with an impressive record of 76 wins and only five losses.

Foreman was married five times, but his longest and final marriage was to Mary Joan Martelly, whom he wed in 1985. Together, they raised a large family, including five sons—all named George—and seven daughters, two of whom were adopted.

Osimhen Breaks Odegbami’s Super Eagles Goal Record

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has zoomed past legend Segun Odegbami on Nigeria’s all-time goal scorers list, bagging his 24th goal for the Super Eagles in a key 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Friday. The Galatasaray star finished off a high-flying free kick from Ademola Lookman, tapping it in perfectly at the far post to give Nigeria the lead.

With that strike, Osimhen climbed to second place on Nigeria’s scoring chart, now hot on the trail of the late Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals. It was his first game in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and he hit his 24th goal in just his 39th match for Nigeria. He’d tied Odegbami’s mark last November in a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

This season, the 26-year-old has been on fire, racking up 20 goals and four assists in 20 Super Lig games for table-topping Galatasaray. Across all competitions, he’s got 26 goals and five assists in 30 matches—talk about a hot streak!

Victor Osimhen, the standout striker for Galatasaray this season, broke the deadlock for the Super Eagles with a precise side-footed finish off a free-kick delivered by Ademola Lookman. The Nigerian star then doubled the lead, intercepting the ball at midfield before coolly chipping it over Rwanda’s goalkeeper.

The 2-0 victory propels the three-time African champions to third place in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group, following South Africa’s 2-0 triumph against Lesotho. Coach Amadou Chelle’s squad will now prepare to take on Zimbabwe in their next match on Tuesday.

Arsenal Hit with New Setback as Calafiori Exits Italy Camp Due to Knee Injury

Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori has withdrawn from the national team camp after injuring his knee during Italy’s 2-1 defeat to Germany on Thursday. The setback has sparked concern for Arsenal, where the player will now undergo further evaluation by the club’s medical team. Italy’s medical staff suspect the injury involves the collateral ligament, estimating it to be between a grade one and two severity, though Arsenal’s doctors will provide the definitive diagnosis.

Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the development on Friday via X, noting that Calafiori’s exit from the Italy squad was immediate due to the injury. Romano posted, “Riccardo Calafiori leaves Italy camp with immediate effect after knee injury suffered yesterday. Italy staff suggest Calafiori suffered knee collateral injury between grade one/two but final assessment will be made by Arsenal staff.” While early indications point to a moderate injury, the full extent and recovery timeline remain uncertain pending Arsenal’s detailed examination. The news adds to Arsenal’s worries as they await clarity on their defender’s condition ahead of future fixtures.
