Suspected Criminals Kills Ten Soldiers And One Officer In Benue State

At least ten soldiers and one officer have been killed by suspected criminals in Benue State.

The Nigerian Army said the troops came under attack while on routine operational task.

According to a statement last night by the Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. MOHAMMED YERIMA, the troops were initially declared missing but their bodies were later found by a search and rescue team in Konshisha Local Government Area of the state.

He added that the bodies of the slain troops were evacuated immediately, while efforts were ongoing to track down the perpetrators of the heinous crime with a view to bringing them to justice.

YERIMA further said the Nigerian Army was determined to ensure that the unprovoked attack did not disrupt the general peace being enjoyed by the residents.

IG: I Will Battle Banditry, Kidnapping, Secessionists

Acting Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba began his tenure on Wednesday with a pledge to confront “increasingly, complex and pervasive security threats” in the country.

He listed them as “terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, secessionist agitation and sundry organized crimes.”

Baba, 58, who was appointed on Tuesday, spoke at the Force Headquarters in Abuja after taking the reins from Mohammed Adamu.

Following his decoration at the State House by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Police Affairs Minister Muhammad Dingyadi, Baba was driven into the Louis Eder House at about 2:18pm in a Toyota Prado Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

He inspected the quarter guards before moving to the conference room where the erstwhile IG gave him the handing over note and the police flag to symbolize the transfer of authority.

Baba said: “Much as the challenge of leading the Force to address these threats in the shortest possible time frame, restore security order, and return our beloved nation to the path of national unity may appear daunting, I am inspired by the fact that from my extensive years of service, I can confidently say that the Nigeria Police is endowed with some of the finest, courageous and patriotic officers who, undoubtedly, shall support me to advance the internal security vision of Mr President.”

To achieve the task, Baba told reporters at the State House that “definitely, we are going to rejig our operational strategies.”

He asked Nigerians to “expect improvement in the security situation” and urged them to “collaborate and cooperate with us.”

“With all the inadequacies we have, we still require everybody to be part of policing in this country. And that is why the emphasis on community policing will continue and the emphasis of collaborating with all other sister agencies will continue and we hope to have a better situation very soon.”

April 8, 2021 NIN: Group Seeks Dec 31 Deadline

NIN: Group Seeks Dec 31 Deadline

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) yesterday said the one-month extension for the National Identification Number (NIN) registration by the Federal Government is not enough to capture all Nigerians.

He said rather than affixing a timeline to the exercise, it should be allowed to go on for December 31, this year.

Its President Mr Adeolu Ogunbanjo, in a telephone interview, said in view of the huge number of the people that do not have NIN, it would be difficult to achieve in one month.

He said: “Only 51 million linkages have been done so far, and that is on the average consumer having three SIM cards per person, meaning that about 17 million to 18 million Nigerians have actually done their NIN links.

“We have about 120 million subscribers with about 220 million linkages to be done, we have only done 51 million at the centres, and they are very slow due to poor connectivity from network operators.

“So, we are saying extend it to December 31, to enable everybody to register and all documents such as drivers’ license and bank accounts will now be linked appropriately,” Ogunbanjo said.

Ogunbanjo, who noted that the one-month extension of the exercise would not be sufficient to capture the over 200 million subscribers in the country however, advised subscribers to link their SIMs with their NINs and to avoid being sanctioned.

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had in December 2020 directed telecommunication subscribers to obtain their NIN and link them with SIM cards.

The NCC had earlier announced April 6, as the deadline for Nigerians to link their National Identification Numbers (NINs) to their SIM cards, but the exercise was extended to May 6.

Drama Over Ex-IG Adamu’s Removal

Former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu’s removal from office was announced shortly after he returned to his desk at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, a Presidency source, said Wednesday.

The source said his removal was to be announced in the morning but the ex-IG’s trip to Owerri to assess the damage caused by the Easter Monday attack on the Imo State police headquarters, delayed the announcement.

The source said: “A news conference scheduled for mid-day to be addressed by Minister of Police Affairs Mohammed Dingyadi, was put off till around 2pm when it was discovered that the former IG had gone to Owerri on official assignment. When we called him to be sure of his location, he told us he was in Imo State. And when he said he was on his way to the airport en route Abuja, we decided to put the conference on hold.

“We knew the flight won’t take more than 45 minutes. So, we waited and when it was confirmed that he was in his FHQ office, we now addressed the news conference.”

“The former IG knew about the news conference, so, there was nothing like he was fired while on official duty.”
