National Assembly To Meet Labour Union Leaders Next Week Over Minimum Wage Bill Saga

After a day of nationwide protests, the leadership of the National Assembly will next week meet labour leaders over a bill which seeks to remove the minimum wage negotiations from the exclusive legislative list.

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, ALHASSAN ADO-DOGUWA, disclosed this while addressing workers, who marched to the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to protest the bill.

But the sponsor of the bill, Hon DATTI MUHAMMAD, in an interview took a swipe at the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, saying they should be civil in their opposition to the bill and stop attacking him.

Recall that the bill seeking to remove negotiations on the minimum wage from the exclusive list to the concurrent list passed the second reading in the House on February 23.

At plenary, MOHAMMED, while defending the bill, stated that it would allow both the federal and state governments to freely negotiate minimum wage with their workers in line with principles of federalism.

But workers across the federation yesterday staged protests to register their opposition to the bill.

Femi Falana Disagrees With FG On The Use Of Loot Recovered From James Ibori

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. ITSE SAGAY, has advised President BUHARI to use the loot recovered from JAMES IBORI to fund projects in Delta State.

SAGAY an interview said using the latest £4.2m tranche of the IBORI loot to fund the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Abuja-Kano railway, would be unjust since such projects would have no direct impact on the lives of the people of Delta.

On his part, human rights lawyer, FEMI FALANA described the attempt by the federal government to use the recovered loot to fund choice projects as illegal and unconstitutional.

He noted that the British government has no right to determine how the recovered loot should be spent.

The House of Representatives has also urged the Federal Government to halt appropriation of £4.2 million recovered from former Delta state Governor, JAMES IBORI.

The resolution followed a unanimous adoption of a motion by Minority Leader NDUDI ELUMELU at plenary yesterday.

The motion was co-sponsored by nine other lawmakers from Delta.

Speaking, ELUMELU said the said amount, being proceeds of looted funds recovered from former governor was being transferred to the coffers of the federal government without recourse to Delta state.

In his ruling, Deputy Speaker AHMED WASE mandated the committees to conclude investigations and report to the House within two weeks.

Speaking on Inspiration FM’s All Out Politics, some Nigerians were of divergent views on the ownership of the recovered loot.
