Labour Tells National Assembly To Start Differential Wage Bill With Political Office Holders

The organized labour has again criticized political office holders over a bill that seeks to remove minimum wage negotiations from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent legislative list.

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, AYUBA WABBA, during a meeting between the House of Representatives leadership and labour leaders, said the restructuring of wages should start with political officeholders.

At the meeting were the Speaker of the House, FEMI GBAJABIAMILA;  Majority Leader, AL HASSAN ADO-DOGUWA; Deputy Majority Leader, PETER AKPATASON; sponsor of the bill, GARBA DATTI MUHAMMAD; and representatives of relevant committees of the House.

Leading the labour side were WABBA and President of the Trade Union Congress, QUADRI OLALEYE.

Recall that workers, under the aegis of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, on Wednesday last week, held a nationwide protest against the bill.

At the meeting, WABBA stated and I quote, “We are ready to defend our position. If we are to start restructuring wages, I think it should start from the political class. When salaries were reviewed by 50 per cent in 2011; those of political office holders were reviewed by 800 per cent.

“So, if it is about the ability to pay.  It should start from that stage. Our own is only the minimum wage while some are collecting the maximum wage,” end of quote.

Violence Erupts In Ilorin Over Hijab Wearing Controversy As Christians, Muslims Clash

Violence erupted this morning in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital after the state government reopened 10 schools shut last month over the use of hijab by Muslim female students.

The violence started after Christian officials of Baptist School, Surulere disallowed the girls in Hijab from gaining access into the school.

This did not go down well with Muslim parents which led to an eventual clash with angry Christian and Muslim faithful throwing various objects including stones and plastic chairs at themselves.

The security operatives dispersed them with tear gas.

The hijab controversy started over three weeks ago when officials of Saint Anthony Secondary School prevented Muslim female students from gaining entrance to the school claiming that it is a missionary school.

Wolves Coach, Nuno Espirito-Santos Says Patricio Will Be “Ok’ After Worrisome Head Injury

Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio is “conscious” and “going to be OK” after his head injury against Liverpool, says head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Patricio was taken off on a stretcher after a 15-minute delay following a collision with his captain Conor Coady near the end of Wolves’ 1-0 defeat.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah had an effort ruled out for offside towards the end of the Premier League match and, as Patricio tried to prevent the Egyptian from scoring, his head collided with Coady’s knee.

The flag was not raised until after Salah had scored from an offside position, but it is unclear whether an earlier decision would have prevented the collision.

John Ruddy was brought on as a concussion substitute after the 33-year-old Portugal keeper Patricio, was treated on the pitch.

Wolves forward Raul Jimenez, in the stands at Molineux on Monday, fractured his skull against Arsenal in November.

Santo also said “He’s conscious, he’s aware and he remembers what happened.

“The assessment is positive – he’s going to be OK.”
