The Presidency has criticized calls for secession, noting that President MUHAMMADU BUHARI will not be bullied.

Addressing journalists during a media parley at the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, presidential spokesman GARBA SHEHU said those advocating for secession are the problem of the country.

He said although the Federal Government is working to address challenges being faced in the country, those calling for secession and national conference are unelectable people who do not care for the nation's democracy.

Gov Obaseki Pays N1.5m Medical Bills For 3 Albinos

The Edo Government has released N1.5 million to offset the medical bills of three Persons with Albinism (PWA) suffering from skin cancer in the state.

Odigie said the money was made available from the N5 million Health Care Intervention Fund approved by Gov. Godwin Obaseki to the foundation early in the year.

She said the beneficiaries, including Mrs Priscilla Chikelu, Mrs Margaret Omorogbe and Mrs Doris Olomu, were each entitled to N500,000 hospital bills.

Odigie, however, regretted that Omorogbe died on April 12 at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.

She said the fund would be given to her family members to offset her medical bills and bring her corpse to Edo for burial.

She commended Obaseki for alleviating the plight of PWA in the state and making health care accessible to all.

Odigie also commended the state Ministry of Health for facilitating the release of the intervention fund.

She urged PWA to always avoid the midday sun, saying it is injurious to their skin.

“PWA can prevent coming down with skin cancer by avoiding the midday sun, using protective clothing and applying sunscreen lotions (creams with SPF 50 and above),’’ she said.

Chad President Idriss Deby Dies Fighting Rebels

Deby had just been re-elected president of his nation.

AFP reports that Deby, who has been in power for three decades, died of injuries sustained while fighting rebels in the north of the Sahel, land-locked country.

Chad has been engulfed in crisis, with violent clashes trailing a presidential contest in which Deby was one of the contestants.

At least 55 people were killed and more than 40 injured when ethnic groups in the southeastern region of Salamat clashed last week.

President Muhammadu Buhariof Nigeria, in a statement issued on Monday, April 19, 2021, extended his condolences to President Deby over the bloodshed.

Buhari said the unrest has shattered decades of relative peace and stability in the country.

68-year-old Deby was one of Africa's longest-serving leaders. He seized power during a rebellion in 1990, and showed no signs of relinquishing same.

He had just been declared winner of the April 11 presidential election, earning a sixth term in office for himself.

He had scored 79.3 percent of the votes cast, according to the electoral umpire. He was declared dead on the day he was declared winner of the election.
