July 22, 2021 Gov Fayemi Inaugurates 260,000 Capacity Private Cemetery In Ekiti

Gov Fayemi Inaugurates 260,000 Capacity Private Cemetery In Ekiti

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, on Wednesday inaugurated a 260,000 capacity, first private-owned cemetery, the first in the state.

Fayemi, while inaugurating the ‘CitiGate Park and Gardens Cemetery’ located at Emirin area of the state, said the facility had the capacity to avert environmental hazards and safeguard the health of the citizens.

Fayemi, represented by Mrs Iyabo Fakunle-Okieimen, the Commissioner for Environment, said the initiative symbolised the government’s efforts toward encouraging private investors in the state.

“The smooth take-off of this business is a testimony that Ekiti is encouraging private investors to invest their hard-earned money in the state.

“With this investment by a private body, Ekiti is no longer a rural setting.

“In USA, Britain and other European countries, you can’t just bury your dead at home.

“Aside the fact that it causes groundwater pollution, it devalues our buildings and reduces its aesthetic values.

“This is a public-private initiative but will be driven largely by the private owners.

“We appeal to the drivers of this business to try and replicate this across the 16 local governments in the state, so that our late parents can be buried easily in cemeteries that are neater and well laid out.

“This is cheaper compared to what you can get in Lagos and other cities and our people can now bring their dead parents home to be buried from other parts of the country,” he said.

The governor assured that every step would be taken to support business owners in Ekiti, through the relevant legal framework and giving of tax waiver.

Mr Abiodun Aluko, a former Deputy Governor in Ekiti and one of the facility’s Directors, said the concept of a private cemetery was universal, owing to growing population.

According to him, Ekiti should not be exempted from the emerging global civilisation.

“The land we have here can accommodate 260,000 corpses.

“But this pilot scheme we are starting is for only 260 corpses, with the hope to expand in future until we exhaust our land resource to a full capacity.

“We have provisions for both Christians and Muslims.

“With time, we will build event facilities like halls and Churches here, where people can hold their burial procession and even reception close to the cemetery to minimise cost,” he said.

Mr Ayodele Olaiya, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, described the investment as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) saying it would generate revenues into government’s coffers and prevent outbreak of endemic diseases.

“In this part of the world, we drink majorly from boreholes and wells, so, the cemetery should be far away from homes in order not to endanger our health,” he said.

Flood Deaths Rise To 33 In Central China

The death toll following severe flooding in China’s Henan province and its capital Zhengzhou has risen to at least 33.

At least eight people were still missing, the authorities announced on Thursday.

Since last Friday when the heavy rains began, at least 376,000 people in the province had been brought to safety from danger zones.

According to official figures, at least 25 people died in Zhengzhou alone after the heaviest rainfall in the region since weather records began.

Videos showed how some of the multi-lane roads in the metropolis of nine million people had turned into raging rivers on Tuesday.

The water masses also flooded the metro, where hundreds of people were temporarily trapped in trains and tunnels.

The rainfall in the region was the heaviest since record-keeping began 60 years ago, coming as scientists say climate change is worsening flooding around the world, alongside other increasingly extreme weather patterns.

Rainstorms submerged Zhengzhou’s metro late Tuesday, killing 12 people and injuring five, while city officials said hundreds were rescued from the subway.

Nerve-shredding images shared on social media showed shocked passengers contending with the chest-high waters inside a train carriage. Rescuers cut open the roof of the coach to pull people to safety, local media reported.

South Africa Lets Jailed Former President Zuma Attend Brother’s Funeral

South Africa’s jailed former President Jacob Zuma has been granted compassionate leave for one day to attend the funeral of his younger brother, prison authorities said.

Zuma, 79, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court last month after snubbing fraud investigators probing his presidency from 2009 until 2018.

He has been jailed at Estcourt prison since handing himself over to authorities in the early hours of July 8. The prison is close to his rural home at Nkandla in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province, where funeral proceedings for Zuma’s brother, Michael, are expected to be held on Thursday.

“As a short-term, low-risk classified inmate, Mr Zuma’s application for compassionate leave was processed and approved,” the Department of Correctional Services said in a statement, adding that while outside the prison, Zuma was not required to wear the offenders’ uniform.

Inmates in South Africa are usually allowed to attend relatives’ funerals – a right denied to the country’s first Black President Nelson Mandela when he was in jail for fighting the apartheid regime.

Zuma’s brother died aged 77 after a long illness, according to local media.

Sporadic pro-Zuma protests broke out when Zuma handed himself over and escalated into riots involving looting and arson that President Cyril Ramaphosa has described as an “insurrection”.

The unrest swept across Kwa-Zulu Natal and the country’s economic heartland province of Gauteng, killing 276 people and destroying hundreds of businesses.

Thousands of soldiers were deployed to help quell the violence, among the worst since the ruling African National Congress (ANC) won South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994 to replace white minority rule.

Zuma’s long-running corruption trial is expected to resume on August 10, despite his request to have the case postponed due to the pandemic and recent unrest.

He faces 16 charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering, and has entered a not guilty plea.

He retains a fervent support base, both within the ANC and among the general public.

July 19, 2021 Bandits Shoot Down Airforce Fighter Jet

Bandits Shoot Down Airforce Fighter Jet

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft was shot down by bandits on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

The pilot made an escape as bandits rained bullets.

NAF spokesperson, Edward Gabkwet, says the military jet was attacked while returning from an air interdiction mission between the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna States.

Gabkwet adds that the pilots and all other occupants were rescued, and that the jet's pilot, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, made an escape from the aircraft as the bandits rained bullets.

"Using his survival instincts, the pilot, who came under intense ground fire from the bandits, was able to evade them and sought refuge in nearby settlements awaiting sunset," Gabkwet says.

He adds that; “Using the cover of darkness and his phone set for navigation, Flight Lieutenant Dairo was able to elude several bandits’ strongholds and maneuvered his way to a Nigerian Army Unit, where he was finally rescued.

“It is instructive to note that upon receipt of the news of the crash, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, had directed that all efforts must be emplaced to rescue the pilot.

"Accordingly, NAF Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms and helicopter gunships provided close air support to NAF Special Forces and Nigerian Army troops who were able to locate the crash site and the pilot’s parachute, while also combing nearby locations for any sign of the pilot.

"It is gladdening to note that while in hiding, Flight Lieutenant Dairo confirmed that the presence of NAF aircraft within the vicinity of the crash site helped in scaring the bandits who were after him, thus enabling him to find refuge and escape to a safe location."

Nigeria has been battling terrorists and bandits in its northern region for more than a decade.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a lucrative business for bandits in this region.
