Fire Razes INEC Office In Enugu

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Obollo-Afor, Udenu local government area of Enugu State has been razed down by midnight fire.

The cause of the fire, which was said to have occurred late on Thursday is not known yet.

The police confirmed the fire incident In a statement by the Enugu police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, titled, ‘Fire incident at INEC office in Obollo-Afor: CP orders the conduct of the thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak and damages incurred’.

The statement noted that the combined effort of the state fire service, residents, and security agents prevented the fire from razing other offices.

The statement read in part, “Following a distress call received at Udenu Police Divisional Headquarters of Enugu State Command on 13/05/2021 at about 2140hrs, alleging that there was fire outbreak at the Obollo-Afor Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Udenu L.G.A. of the State,

“Operatives attached to the Division immediately raced to the scene, while contacting Fire Service Office in the area to promptly put out the fire.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire, which was eventually put out before it could spread to other offices around the building, through the combined efforts of the State Fire Service, the Police and law-abiding citizens, may have been caused by power surge due to sudden power supply to the building.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Aliyu, has ordered the cordoning off of the scene and launch of thorough investigation to further ascertain the actual cause of the fire outbreak and damages incurred.”

May 14, 2021 Femi Adesina: Like Man City, Nigeria Will Overcome Security Challenges

Femi Adesina: Like Man City, Nigeria Will Overcome Security Challenges

Adesina says some people are laughing at Buhari's government due to unrelenting security challenges that were possibly instigated by them.

Adesina likened the present situation of the country to how Manchester City FC moved from the bottom of the league table to become the champions of the 2020/21 English Premier League (EPL).

In an article titled, “Lessons for Nigeria from EPL”, Adesina said some forces who know what President Muhammadu Buhari can achieve, have positioned themselves to sabotage his administration.

He said many critics of Buhari are focused on setting themselves against the government just like other English clubs challenged Man City at the beginning of the 2019/20 EPL season, because of the team’s overwhelming success in the previous season.

Adesina wrote; “Recall what happened in the 2019/2020 season. Man City was eyeing a treble. Three back-to-back seasons as champions, and a record in English football. But the adversaries knew the record that was to be set, so they arrayed themselves against the team. Just as some forces knew the record that was to be achieved by Muhammadu Buhari as Nigerian President, and which he had begun to show since 2015 when he got into office, and they positioned themselves against the government.

“Every team, big or small, strong or weak, set its sights on Man City last season, flexed muscles, summoned superhuman skills and strength whenever they were meeting the champions attempting a treble.

“The lesson? When you are high-flying, the centrifugal forces will come against you, and it would only take the grace of God for you to attain.

“Yoruba people call those forces Aiye. When Aiye is on your case, as it was against Man City, and it is against the Buhari government, you need God, and God alone. Aiye (meaning ‘the world,’ if freely translated) is the negative part of mankind. The pernicious, baleful, sly and scheming part of humanity. If Aiye gets on your matter, you need God and God alone.

Aiye was in full force against it. And the 2020/2021 season was initially not looking promising either. Eight weeks gone, the team was placed 13th on the table. It had lost 2–5 to Leicester City at home in Etihad Stadium, Tottenham drubbed it by two goals, played a draw with teams that couldn’t hold a candle to it in the past, and was generally forlorn and limp. Aiye was having a ball, laughing Man City to scorn. Aren’t they doing the same thing against the government in our country today, due to unrelenting security challenges, some of them possibly instigated by Aiye themselves?

“Victory came after victory, to the extent that the team was unbeaten in 21 consecutive games in the different competitions it was involved in. From the ashes, the Salamander had risen. Fire could not consume it, and today, Man City are champions, fifth time in 10 years.”

Adesina's posts on social media, especially on Facebook, usually get Nigerians talking.

In one of his articles in 2020, the presidential spokesperson asked Nigerians to count themselves lucky  to be blessed with a leader like Buhari.

Buhari Tells Nigerians In Eid Message: ‘We Should Pray Against Kidnapping, Banditry’

Buhari says unity is important to combat the nation's challenges.

Many parts of Nigeria are troubled by violent attacks by terrorists and bandits who have killed thousands and displaced tens of thousands from their communities.

In a message to mark the Eid Al Fitr following the completion of a period of fasting by Muslims, Buhari said unity is important to combat the nation's challenges.

The president said Nigerians must never succumb to division, and must live peacefully with one another to the benefit of a united country.

"We should jointly pray against the tragic incidents of kidnapping and banditry and the desperate quest for political power expressed through blackmail against the existence of our country as a united entity," he said in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.

Buhari urged political and religious leaders as well as traditional rulers to encourage Nigerians to turn towards one another in love and compassion.

The president had over the past week held numerous security meetings with service chiefs to find a lasting solution to insecurity in the country.

The 78-year-old's National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno, announced on Tuesday, May 11 that he had directed security agencies to deal decisively with those causing mayhem in any part of the country.

"President Buhari's approach to dealing with this problem basically is that he recognises that his primary responsibility is ensuring national survival in a hostile environment," Monguno said.

The NSA said all other national objectives and obligations have to be subordinated to the primary concern of bringing back security and normalcy.

Imo Gov Uzodinma Sacks 20 Commissioners

The governor told the affected ex-commissioners that they will be found relevant in other areas if they do not make the new cabinet he will be reconstituting soon.

The governor has also dissolved the State Executive Council (SEC).

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, says the reason for the dissolution is to rejig and re-energize the activities of the state government.

Uzodinma has been in office for a year now.

Emelumba says the governor appreciates the dismissed officers for their contributions to the administration and people of Imo.

“He appreciated them for their contribution towards all the success of the government and wish them well in their future endeavours,” Emelumba says.

Of the 28 commissioners in the cabinet, eight were left to carry on with their roles.

The commissioners left standing are those in Health, Information, Tourism, Women Affairs, Works, Finance, Youth, and the Ministry of Technology portfolios.

Emelumba also assures that a new executive council will be constituted soon.

The sacking of the 20 commissioners arrives a month after the governor reshuffled his cabinet and appointed new commissioners for Finance and Health.

Governor Uzodimma tells the affected ex-commissioners that they will be found useful in other areas if they do not make the new cabinet he will be reconstituting soon.
