Election Losers Are Sponsoring Nationwide Protest – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that candidates who lost the 2023 presidential election are behind the planned nationwide protest. Speaking on Monday at the State House, Abuja, after President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law, Akpabio pointed fingers at Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Omoyele Sowore of African Action Congress (AAC), and others as sponsors.

Various individuals and organizations have organized the protest in response to the economic challenges brought by Tinubu's administration. Scheduled for August 1 and 10, Akpabio suggested that the election losers aim to use the protest to gain power illegitimately.

Akpabio warned that such actions could lead to anarchy and emphasized that property destruction would only further strain Nigeria's finances. He urged the protesters to avoid violence and vandalism, stating, "Any destruction of any property will cost Nigeria money. We don’t have the money. Instead, let’s put the money into developing you and your environs instead of going to rebuild."

The Senate President also raised concerns about the potential for looting and other criminal activities under the guise of the protest. He highlighted that the current economic hardships are a result of long-standing issues from previous administrations, not Tinubu's policies alone. Akpabio urged the youth not to be misled by politically motivated groups and stressed the need for unity and constructive solutions.

Last week, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun noted the involvement of foreign mercenaries in the protest planning, further complicating the situation.

Federal Government to Sell 50kg Rice at ₦40,000 – Minister Announces

The Federal Government has urged calm regarding the proposed nationwide protest, announcing the creation of centers across the country where Nigerians can purchase a 50kg bag of rice for ₦40,000. This information was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a briefing on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

Idris stated that this initiative is part of the Tinubu administration's efforts to alleviate living conditions for citizens. He argued that the nationwide protests are unnecessary since the president is already addressing the concerns of the protest organizers.

"The FEC believes that most of the protesters' demands are being addressed by the Federal Government, making the protests redundant. This is a listening government, and the President has heard the voices of those planning this protest. There is no need for it as the President is already acting on their behalf," Idris said.

He highlighted recent efforts by the FG, such as distributing 740 trucks of grains to states and announcing that 50kg bags of rice can now be purchased for ₦40,000 at designated centers nationwide.

"For instance, at the last Council meeting, we announced that 20 trucks had been given to each state governor for distribution to those in need, particularly the poorest in society. Additionally, rice is being sold at about 50% of its cost. This rice is available at various centers across all states for ₦40,000 per bag. Initially, about 10 trucks have been provided to each state, and this is just the beginning. The government acknowledges that these supplies may not be enough, but they are essential first steps, with more interventions to come," Idris explained.

He also mentioned that the FG expects food prices to decrease with the onset of the rainy season, as investments are being made in traditional agriculture and irrigation activities.

Furthermore, Idris cited the student loan scheme and the expected disbursement of CNG kits as additional efforts to ease the cost of living. However, he noted that logistical challenges have delayed the rollout of CNG buses.

"Some of these buses have already been imported, and conversion kits are becoming available. Conversion centers are starting to get active. The delays are due to the procurement processes and the time required to order these items. As we transition from fossil fuels to renewables, we anticipate a reduction of over 60% in transportation costs," he elaborated.

US, UK, and Canada Issue Security Warnings to Citizens in Nigeria Ahead of Protests

The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have issued security alerts to their citizens in Nigeria due to potential violence associated with upcoming nationwide protests. Scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, these protests are aimed at addressing issues of hunger and hardship.

In their travel advisories, the three countries advised their citizens to avoid areas where clashes between security forces and protesters may occur. The US Mission in Abuja specifically recommended Americans stay away from rallies and large crowds and keep informed through local media. Their advisory warned of possible roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic delays, and confrontations, with protests expected to take place from July 29 to August 5, 2024.

The UK High Commission also issued a warning, indicating that protests might occur between July 29 and August 10 in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos. British nationals were advised to be cautious, avoid large gatherings, and stay updated with media reports, as past protests have sometimes escalated into violence with little warning. The advisory suggested avoiding crowded places and seeking safety if encountering threatening situations.

Similarly, the Canadian government cautioned its citizens about potential disruptions to traffic and public transportation, and the possibility of sudden violence during the protests. They recommended remaining vigilant, following local authorities' guidance, and monitoring local media for updates.

These advisories underscore the heightened concerns regarding the planned protests and their potential impact on safety and security in Nigeria.
