Journalists’ Lives Under Threat In Nigeria, Says US

The United States of America has called for the protection of the lives of journalists in Nigeria, saying that threats to journalists have been alarming.

The US Consulate General Public Affairs Officer, Stephen Ibelli, said this while speaking through a Zoom meeting in Uyo during a media workshop on Investigative Health Care Reporting organised by the International Press Centre for journalists in the South-South in collaboration with the US Consulate.

He stated that journalists in the country were working under unfavorable conditions.

He said the US Consulate was ready and willing to support and promote investigative health reports, adding that it had been involved in the promotion and sponsorship of health programmes across the country like USAID.

Ibelli said, “I appreciate International Press Centre for partnering with us. Your presence is an indication of your strong interest to report things on the health sector.

“Nigeria is facing a lot of challenges in the health sector. Since 2003, we have invested over N6bn in fighting HIV/AIDs. I hope the seminar will help you tell the story better.

“Many people look to the media to help tell the story. We will continue to work on the improvement of the training, welfare of journalists and how to combat misinformation. We are particularly concerned about the protection of journalists, and their safety in reporting.”

House Of Reps Receives Proposal To Split Adamawa Into 3 States

The People of Mubi , Northern Adamawa district, and Chamba Cultural Development Association (CCDA) have demanded for the creation of Amana and Gongola States, out of Adamawa.

Mr Ahmad Sajo, Spokesperson of Mubi Local Government Area, said that Mubi deserved to be a state, named Amana with capital city in Mubi.

According to him, originally they are part of Cameroun, but by choice, they joined Nigeria because of promises made to them by the then Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, for peace and progress.

“Hence we anchor our demand on the premise of the trust we had in Nigeria which in Hausa means Amana.

“Restore our status as an autonomous region or state as it was when we joined you.

“This is because the premier of Northern Nigeria promised us our continued status as a distinct entity within the Nigerian state and our capital which is Mubi,” he said.

Similarly in his submission, Alhaji Yunusa Gisilanbe, State Chairman of CCDA, also demanded creation of Gongola State.

He said the new state would constitute southern senatorial district of Adamawa made up of Ganye, Toungo, Jada, Mayo-Belwa, Demsa, Numan, Lamurde, Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas.

He said that if created, three additional local government areas needed to be created- Gangdu from Ganye, Yelli from Jada, Nasarawo-Jereng from Mayo-Belwa, Barrong from Demsa.

He further said that the association also supported local government autonomy in all ramifications.

In his remarks, Rep. Mohammed Monguno, Chairman, House of Representatives Constitutional Review Committee, Yola Centre, assured that all memoranda would be submitted before the house for considerations.

Mohammed, who is the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, said that the review of the constitution would be based on wishes and aspirations of the people.

Niger Government Confirms Bandits Kidnapped 136 Students But Governor Remains Abroad

Security agencies are being careful in the pursuit of the kidnappers to avoid collateral damage.

The bandits' attack on Salihu Tanko Islamic School in Tegina, Rafi local government area also left one person shot dead, with another sustaining gunshot injuries.

The government could not confirm the actual number of victims until it was announced by Deputy Governor Ahmed Mohammed Ketso during a media briefing on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

He said security agencies were being careful in the pursuit of bandits to avoid collateral damage to the hostages.

The deputy governor also assured parents of the students that the government is committed to the safe return of their children.

Briefing was helmed by the deputy governor because Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, is currently abroad on a 'security mission'.

His spokesperson, Mary Noel-Berje, said in a statement late on Sunday that the attack happened shortly after he left the country.

Without revealing which specific country he travelled, she said the governor is abroad to explore all possibilities of strengthening the state's security architecture.

Noel-Berje said the governor is expected back in the state 'within the shortest period of time', but was not specific about when.

Sunday's abduction is a repeat of the abduction of 24 students and 14 others at the Government Science College, Kagara in Niger in February.

The students were released over a week later, after the government negotiated with their abductors.

Some passengers of a Sharon Bus travelling to Minna were also abducted on Sunday, with attacks recorded across numerous communities in three LGAs - Rafi, Wushishi, and Bida.

In the Wushishi attack, gunmen attacked 17 communities on about 70 motorcycles and shot many residents.

Some women and children drowned as they tried to escape across River Kaduna, according to the government's report.

The Niger government on Wednesday announced the total ban of commercial motorcycles in Minna, to ensure the safety of the state capital.

Private motorcycles are allowed to operate but with restriction from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am.

The latest attacks highlight yet again the worrying insecurity in the country, with violent crimes increasingly happening in many parts of the country.

The Federal Government's response has been adjudged to be insufficient as thousands are killed, kidnapped for ransom, or displaced from their communities.

House Of Reps Receives Proposal To Change Nigeria’s Name To UAR

The proposal suggests United African Republic or United Alkebulan Republic as Nigeria's new name.

Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant, submitted the proposal to the committee at the South West Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

While presenting the proposal, he said Nigeria's current name was an imposition of its past colonial masters and should be changed.

He said a change of name for the country would physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning.

"At this crossroads in our history, it is mandatory that we change our name to reflect a new beginning which will be ushered in with a new constitution," he said.

Explaining why he chose United African Republic, Jokotoye said Nigeria is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups that need to be united.

As an alternative, he suggested that Nigeria could also choose United Alkebulan Republic (meaning: United Mother of Mankind Republic) as its new name.

The tax consultant also suggested amendments to the constitution to reflect fiscal federalism, state or regional resource and taxation control, removal of immunity clause, and review of the Exclusive Legislative List.
