China Launches First Astronauts to New Space Station

China has launched three astronauts into orbit to begin occupation of the country’s new space station.

The three men – Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo – are to spend three months aboard the Tianhe module some 380km (236 miles) above the Earth.

It will be China’s longest crewed space mission to date and the first in nearly five years.

On Thursday, their Shenzhou-12 capsule successfully took off atop its Long March 2F rocket.

Lift-off from the Jiuquan satellite launch centre in the Gobi desert was at 09:22 Beijing time (01:22 GMT).

The launch and subsequent mission are another demonstration of China’s growing confidence and capability in the space domain.

In the past six months, the country has returned rock and soil samples to Earth from the surface of the Moon, and landed a six-wheeled robot on Mars – both highly complex and challenging endeavours.

The primary objective for Commander Nie Haisheng and his team on the Shenzhou-12 mission is to bring the 22.5-tonne Tianhe module into service.

“I have a lot of expectations,” Mr Nie said ahead of the launch.

“We need to set up our new home in space and test a series of new technologies. So, the mission is tough and challenging. I believe with the three of us working closely together, doing thorough and accurate operations, we can overcome our challenges. We have the confidence to complete the mission.”

US Restates Condemnation of Nigeria’s Twitter Ban

The United States has renewed its condemnation of Nigeria for suspending Twitter’s operations in the country, a move that senior U.S. officials said is a sign of restricting political space in Nigeria.

A report on the website of Voice of America (VOA) on Tuesday quoted Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Akunna Cook, as saying during a Monday webinar hosted by the Washington-based Atlantic Council that “the Twitter suspension was very concerning and remains a source of concern.”

Cook, a daughter of Nigerian immigrants, said the country can “play a constructive role” in West Africa but “signs of closing of political space” and signs of restricting free speech are worrisome.

government’s Cook also called China a “strategic competitor” on the continent, while urging Beijing to have “greater transparency” when giving loans to African countries.

“Transparency limits corruption. China has become a large lender to African countries and many large borrowers from China are struggling, struggling with debt sustainability,” Cook said.

The State Department’s top official on African affairs also said there will be “more robust engagements” between the U.S. and Africa under President Joe Biden’s administration but stopped short of elaborating whether there will be a U.S.-Africa summit in 2022, the same year as a planned Russia-Africa summit.

Adamu Garba Explains Why His Crowwe App Was Taken Down

He has been at war with Twitter. So when his app disappeared from Play Store, his critics cheered.

After the Buhari-led federal government suspended the operations of Twitter in Nigeri on Friday, June 4, 2021, Garba was one of the APC members who backed the controversial decision on social media.

Afterwards, a slew of social media users rushed to Google Play Store to hand Adamu's Crowwe some of the most uncomplimentary, brutal reviews ever posted.

Most of the president's critics described the app as the worst thing they've ever used.

On Monday, June 14, some Twitter users noticed that Crowwe, a microblogging platform that mimics Twitter, was no longer on Google's Play Store, prompting insinuations that it had been taken down by Google because of the plethora of bad reviews.

However, Garba, who filed a $1 billion lwasuit against Twitter's Jack Dorsey in the wake of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality in 2020, says Crowwe was taken down to fix a technical glitch and would be back up in the next couple of hours.

“We took down Crowwe app because we are trying to update the codes and then put it back up.

"There are some bugs which we identified which can prevent future downloads so we decided to bring it down, edit the code and then put it back up," Garba tells Punch newspaper.

He denies that the bad reviews targeted at his app were to blame.

“Yes, a lot of people have been posting reports but it has no effect on the app. The truth is that before you publish an app, you have to pass through a lot of audits and a lot of these people commenting don’t know.

“The app being installed has nothing to do with the user but has everything to do with the app itself.

"There is a bug affecting the contact list information so we had to submit a support report to take it down which was done.

"We are almost done with the publishing and we will push it back and it might be installed tonight or tomorrow morning,” Garba, a former presidential aspirant, adds.

The federal government's ban of Twitter has been roundly condemned locally and internationallyas a suppression of free speech and a descent into dictatorship.
