British, German Govts To Build Museum To House Returned Benin Bronze

The National Commission for Museum and Monument (NCMM), the German and British Governments have agreed to build a museum in Edo to house all returned Benin Bronze.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event holds every May 18, but Enugu Museum could not observe its own due to the COVID-19 safety protocols.

The DG said that it was partnering British Museum to conduct excavation into unearthing Benin antiquities.

Tijani, represented on the occasion by the Curator, National Museum of Unity, Enugu, Mr John Kachikwu, said the antiquities stood a chance to bring out positive light in Benin, NCMM and Nigeria.

According to him, the excavated site will form part of the proposed museum, to house the Benin Bronze returned.

“The archaeological site will be part of living, open-air Museum, and a major tourist site in the making.

“German Government, Edo Government, NCMM and Royal Benin Palace are jointly setting up museum centre in Benin City, to form a cultural hub with the Oba’s Palace.

“And we shall replicate this in other cultural centres like Ife, Kano, Igboukwu and others,” the professor said.

He noted that Benin City in future would become a major global tourist attraction in the mould of Venice and Padua.

The director-general said the world renowned British architect, Sir David Adjaye, was assigned to develop this hub.

Moreover, Tijani said the German Government, the Federal and State Governments, had agreed to release numerous priceless antiquities belonging to Nigeria.

“These are several hundreds of Benin Bronze, looted in 1897 and the return is expected to start in 2022.

“In March as well, the University of Aberdeen has also agreed to return an important Benin Bronze to Nigeria; and a few weeks ago, an Ife Bronze was brought back from Mexico.

“And we are currently arguing a case before an International Mediation Panel to return an Ife Bronze head, valued at $5 million,” the director-general said.

He noted that the Ife Bronze head was seized in London from a Belgian, and it formed part of eight other antiquities stolen in a burglary that happened in the National Museum, Jos, Plateau in 1987.

“Success in this may lead to the discovery and recovery of other antiquities stolen during the burglary episode,” Tijani said.

National Cash Transfer: FG Pays N10bn To 1m Beneficiaries Every 2 Months

Mr Apera Iorwa, National Coordinator, National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO) says the Federal Government pays N10 billion to one million beneficiaries every two months from the National Cash Transfer.

NASSCO is a Federal Government agency with the mandate to establish the building blocks and delivery of targeted transfers and livelihood supports to extreme poor and vulnerable households in the country.

From the Federal Government cash transfer programme, each beneficiary got N5,000 monthly but because of logistics, we pay N10,000 every two months and we have paid about one million beneficiaries across the country,’’ he said.

Iorwa said that at first, it started with 19 states from 2016 to 2017 and then in 2018, with the World Bank loan, it came to 24 states and gradually it had covered the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to him, the distribution depends on how the state governments are able to establish their social register in each of their states.

We do this through the World Bank facility of 500 million dollars for five years.

“The Abacha repatriated loot of 325 million dollars was given to National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO). We have a total projection of 822 million dollars for over five years,” he said.

According to him, at the moment, there are 35.2 million individuals from 8.2 million households in the social register in 36 states and FCT.

He said that out of the 35 million individuals, about 49 per cent of them were female and 51 per cent male adding that 68 per cent of them were illiterates.

He said that the cash transfer had also helped to send more children to school, as their parents were able to buy books and school uniforms.

Iorwa added that about 4.8 per rent which amounted to 1.3 million people living with disabilities were benefitting from the programme.

Mrs Ajia Agagbo, Executive Director, Centre for Health Education, Economic Rehabilitation and Social Security (CHEERS), an NGO, said that the meeting was the report on the scorecard of the project for the past one year.

Agagbo said that the centre’s objective was to provide independent monitoring information on the different processes being implemented within the safety net programme.

She said the Third Party Monitoring (TPM) was one of the basic foundational elements in promoting social investment and accountability within the context of any government or donor funded programme.

She said the total population of beneficiaries sampled across the 19 states was 235,744 beneficiaries which represented 50.9 per cent of the overall total on the payroll of the cash transfer programme.

EFCC Chairman Bawa Says Tinubu Is Under Investigation

EFCC Chairman expresses disdain for media trial.

Questioned by ThisDay on why Tinubu hasn't been arrested for alleged corruption, Bawa said: "You asked me a question earlier about arresting people before investigation and now you are saying why didn't we arrest Tinubu?

"Investigation is ongoing. When you are investigating matters like this, they don't end in a day. Thousands of investigations are going on, on a daily basis."

Bawa added that the EFCC won't engage in media trial.

Tinubu has been accused of controlling the finances of Alpha Beta Consulting and for using the company to divert Lagos State funds.

In 2011, the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) tried and acquitted Tinubu for allegedly operating 10 foreign bank accounts during his spell as governor from 1999 to 2007.

Tinubu, 69, is believed to be interested in vying for the office of the president of Nigeria in 2023.

Tinubu caused quite a stir during the 2019 general elections when a bullion van reportedly laden with cash, made an entry into one of his luxury property on Bourdillon, in Ikoyi.
