Makinde Goes Spiritual, Awaits God’s Decision On His Re-Election

Gov Seyi Makinde, on Sunday, says he is praying to God and awaiting His direction on his 2023 re-election bid.

Makinde, who disclosed this during the 2021 Hijrah luncheon held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, declared that 2023 belonged to God and that His will prevail in his political adventure.

The governor stated that he had observed that some of his supporters had started campaigning for his re-election “with the insignia of 4 + 4.

“Please let us go back to God. I did not tell the people in 2019 that I must be governor at all cost.

“The prayer I prayed to God was to allow His will prevail. So, I am saying it again,” he said.

He urged people to always factor-in God into whatever they do, irrespective of the religious inclination.

Makinde promised to ensure that his administration would continue to balance political appointments between Christians and Muslims in the state.

“I have re-appointed seven commissioners and for the remaining 10, it will be a balanced appointment.

“On LAUTECH, we have done our best, I, a Christian from PDP and Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun, a Muslim from another party. We were able to work together and resolve the issue within a year or so,” Makinde stated.

The governor reiterated his administration’s determination to re-double its efforts to ensure the state’s progress and development.

In his sermon at the event, Prof. Daud Noibi said that the 2021 Hijrah celebration was the first of its kind, saying it was a day of joy for all Muslims in the state.

Noibi expression appreciation to the governor for making the luncheon possible and assured him that the Muslim community in the state would continue to support his administration.

The President of the League of Imams in the Southwest, Edo and Delta, Alhaji Daud Akinola, said the luncheon was a unique one for the Muslim community in Oyo.

Akinola, who was represented by Sheik Najimudeen Alkubroh, said that the governor had won the hearts of all Muslim faithful in the state because of the tremendous developmental projects being executed by his administration.

NDLEA Seizes N100bn Worth Of Illicit Drugs In 8 Months

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has said that it seized illicit drugs worth N100 billion between January and August, 2021.

The agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, in Abuja, that in a similar vein, the agency also arrested 8,634 suspected drug traffickers during the period, including 6,461 males and 547 females.

He said the NDLEA also destroyed 1,202 hectares of cannabis farms in various states across the country, while more than 10 million Nigerians abused drugs in the period under review.

Babafemi said: “With over 8, 634 arrests, 2,776,000kg of drugs worth over N100 billion seized, we are sure this ugly situation will be tackled.

“We have secured 1,630 convictions, 3,232 cases in court and over 4,269 drug users counselled and rehabilitated between January and August.

“We are already making substantial progress in our drug supply and drug demand reduction efforts.

“We are convinced that the ongoing War Against Drug Abuse, (WADA) would curb the twin evils of drug abuse and trafficking.’’

Nigeria Records 459 New Cases Of COVID-19

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that 459 persons tested positive for coronavirus, while 30 persons died of COVID-19 complications, in its most recent positive samples across the country.

Lagos, the hardest-hit state by the pandemic, still tops the COVID-19 infection table with 185 new cases, while Abia and Oyo have 38 positive samples each.

Others are Akwa Ibom and Cross River (33), Osun (24), Ekiti (23), Benue (15), Kwara (14), Kano (12), Delta, and the FCT (10), Edo (nine), Kaduna (five), Ogun (three), Kastina, Nasarawa , and Rivers reported (two), each, while Bayelsa recorded(one).

The News Agency of Nigerians, reports that’s the number of Nigeria’s active coronavirus infections, however, declined from 10,026 as reported on Saturday to 8, 429 on Sunday.

”The rise in COVID-19-related deaths is attributed to the 23 deaths captured as backlog from Lagos on Sept. 3, which pushed the overall COVID-19 related deaths in the country to 2,552, as of Sept. 6,2021.

”Lagos state COVID-19-related death toll increased to 645,” the centre said.

The NCDC said that over 2. 7million people have been tested for the virus out of the nation’s roughly 200 million population.

The agency said that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level II, continues to coordinate the national response activities.

It added that So far, the country recorded 195, 511 cases of the virus since its outbreak in 2020.

The centre said that no fewer than 184,529 patients have been successfully treated and discharged.

FG: NDDC Has 362 Bank Accounts Without Proper Reconciliation

The federal government has said it is worried and alarmed that over 13,777 projects being handled by the Niger Delta Development Commission has their execution “substantially compromised.”

It also said that the commission has about 362 bank accounts that lack proper reconciliation.

The Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, made this known in Abuja after receiving the forensic audit report of the NDDC from the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio. 

President Buhari had, in 2019, ordered a forensic audit of the NDDC’s operations from 2001 to 2019.
