Nigeria Fixes July 2022 For Return Of Benin Artefacts By Germany

Director of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Abba Tijani, has said Nigeria has agreed with Germany for hundreds of artefacts stolen during colonial times to be returned from July 2022.

Thousands of pieces of Nigeria’s so-called Benin Bronzes, 16th to 18th century metal plaques and sculptures, were stolen from the palace of the ancient Benin Kingdom only to end up in museums across the US and Europe.

Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City Edo State where it hopes to house the bronzes, seen as among the most highly regarded works of African art.

“We have agreed on a timeline that actual return will start next year, 2022, which is going to be around July, August"  Tijani said.

Breaking:  Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Drops To 17.01 Percent

The National Bureau of Statistics has said that the Consumer Price Index which measures inflation rate dropped to 17.01 per cent in August.

According to the latest CPI report released today, this rate is 0.37 percent points lower than the 17.38 percent recorded in July this year.

This is the fifth straight month that the Nigeria's inflation rate will be moving downward since March this year.

Inflation plunged from 18.17 per cent in March to 18.12 per cent in April before dropping further to 17.93 per cent, 17.75 per cent and 17.38 per cent in the months of May, June and July respectively.

The report noted, “The consumer price index, which measures inflation increased by 17.01 percent (year-on-year) in August 2021.

“This is 0.37 percent points lower than the rate recorded in July 2021 (17.38) percent.

“The percentage change in the average composite CPI for the twelve months period ending August 2021 over the average of the CPI for the previous twelve months period was 16.60 percent, showing 0.30 percent point from 16.30 percent recorded in July 2021.”

UNIBEN Vice Chancellor Orders Immediate Closure Of Varsity

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, has ordered the immediate closure of the University, in the aftermath of the protest that rocked the institution on Tuesday.

Inspiration FM recalls that students of the ivory tower blocked the Benin-Lagos Expressway and the Ekheuan Road over a N20,000 late registration fee imposed by the institution l authority.

The students described this decision as unpleasant particularly in the face of the unfavourable economic situation in the country.

In a statement issued by the Registrar of the institution, Mr Ademola Bobola, Salami ordered all students to vacate their hostels and the University premises not later than noon Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

“The Vice-Chancellor has reviewed the agitation by a section of the students’ body on Tuesday. After due consultation and in the overall interest of the general students’ body, the Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of the Senate, approved the closure of the University with immediate effect.

“This is based on security reports to avoid the students’ action being hijacked by hoodlums, and thereby prevent any form of breakdown of law and order within and outside the campuses of the University,’’ the statement read.

Lagos Signs MoA With Ikeja Electric To Boost Electricity Supply

The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ikeja Electric Plc today signed a Memorandum of Agreement to boost electricity supply in the state, which many consumers feel need to be improved upon.

Under the agreement, the Lagos State government would be financing the project, procuring and providing meters that comply with Ikeja Electric’s minimum standard meter specifications for installation to all customers on the designated feeders and distribution transformers in the Alimosho Local Government Area.

The  Lagos state government would also be providing personnel for the  execution of the project.

However, Ikeja Electric would be responsible for the execution of the project and ensure that funds received from the state government are applied towards network upgrades on designated feeders and distribution transformers and the installation of customer meters.
