Only Buhari Can Decide Who Becomes APC National Chairman, Says Governor Umahi

Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has said only President Muhammadu Buhari can decide who becomes the national chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking while receiving former Borno State Governor, who was in Ebonyi on consultations on contesting for the top APC position,

Governor Umahi said Buhari has a significant role to play on how the next APC chairman will emerge.

According to Governor Umahi, and I quote, “I thank you (Sheriff) for informing us of your decision to contest the APC national chairmanship, but the president, who is the leader of the party, has a role to play. He is the only one that can take a decision, but if it is thrown open, you are my choice. The president can say in the interest of the party, let another person be there; we will obey him", end quote.

Rivers Takes FIRS To Supreme Court Over VAT Collection

The Rivers State government has dragged the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Supreme Court over the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT).

In a suit filed by its Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State asked the Supreme Court to set aside the Court of Appeal’s order which directed the state to maintain status quo on the collection of VAT pending the determination of an appeal filed by the FIRS.

The Federal High Court, Port Harcourt issued an order restraining the FIRS from collecting VAT and Personal Income Tax (PIT) in Rivers state.

The agency later filed a stay of execution which was dismissed by the court.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, FIRS approached the Court of Appeal to take a second look at the matter.

A three-member panel of the appellate court in a ruling on Friday ordered all the parties in the suit to maintain the status quo on the matter.

The panel refrained the parties from taking any action on the lower court’s ruling which gave Rivers State government the right to collect VAT instead of the FIRS.

In its 10 grounds of appeal, the Rivers state government maintained that Justice Haruna Tsammani-led panel of the Appeal Court erred in law when it relied on the provisions of Section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution and the inherent jurisdiction of the appellate court to order all the parties to maintain status quo on the dispute.

Federal Government Ready To Settle Bandits Without Cost

Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, has said the federal government was open to listen to bandits who recant and repent from their evil ways and settle them without cost.

He said this was being planned in a bid to provide a lasting solution to the security threats in the North-west and North-central zones of Nigeria.

“With all pleasure, anybody willing to surrender and do it honourably and honestly, the government is ready to listen. The government is ready to see what they can do to settle them down without much cost,” the minister said in an interview.

Dingyadi explained that the President' Muhammadu Buhari administration planned to reintegrate repentant bandits into the larger society, noting that the government would closely monitor those who have turned a new leaf to ensure they do not return back to their dastardly ways of doing things

“Of course, they are criminals, they have committed atrocities, they have committed crimes, but according to the international laws, when you surrender from a war zone, you are not killed, you are not maimed, you are allowed to have your say.

“We are listening to them to see how we can integrate them into the larger society. What we are trying to do is to get them settled in their various communities, to let them have a kind of means of livelihood so that they can integrate peacefully and honourably into the society.”
