No-Work-No-Pay Directive: FG Battles NARD, Opens Attendance Registers, Resident Doctors Adamant

The Federal Government has mandated all chief medical directors in teaching hospitals nationwide to open attendance registers with a view to stopping salaries of doctors taking part in the strike called by the National Association of Resident Doctors.

The order, which was revealed by a senior health official, was also confirmed by the President of NARD, Dr UYILAWA OKHUAIHESUYI.

The senior health official said government is determined to implement the no-work-no-pay order from today, adding the attendance registers will be opened in all hospitals.

But as government and resident doctors traded blame over the strike, plight of patients in the affected hospitals worsened as many of them were withdrawn by their relatives.

Recall that NARD last week resumed the strike it suspended on April 10 following the Federal Government's promise to meet its demands including payment of the residency fund, COVID-19 allowance, hazard allowance as well as the outstanding salary shortfalls.

The Minister of Health, Dr. CHRIS NGIGE said government is serious about the no-work-no-pay order.

However, the Chairman, House of Representatives committee on Health care services, YUSUF SUNUNU said a meeting has been called today to resolve the crisis.

FG Postpones Second Batch Vaccination

The hope of many Nigerians yet to receive the COVID-19 Vaccine is now hanging in the balance as the Federal Government has postponed the administration of the second phase of the coronavirus vaccine doses.

Just last week, the federal government received four million and eighty doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine from the United States as it steps up efforts to battle a third wave of infections.

The Director of Press, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, WILLIE BASSEY, had earlier announced that the administration would commence tomorrow.

However, in a notice yesterday, BASSEY said the exercise had been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

According to the notice, a new date will be communicated.

The postponement comes as no fewer than 53 persons died from COVID-19 complications in Nigeria within two weeks.

This was contained in the weekly epidemiological report published by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on its website on Sunday.

Abductors Demand N500m To Free Bayelsa SSG’s Mum

Kidnappers of the 80-year-old Madam Betinah Benson, mother of the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Dr Kombowei Benson, have demanded a ransom of N500m for her release.

Another group also demanded N200m for the release of Tari Ajanami, the owner of Club 64, a nightclub.

It was gathered that investigators were looking at the possibility that both abductions were planned by one group.

Calls to police spokesman Asinim Butswat were not routed, so he could not confirm the ransom demands.

But a member of the family of the club owner confirmed that they were contacted by the kidnappers who demanded a ransom of N200m.

“I was shocked when they demanded N200m. I hope and pray that they release our brother unhurt,” the family source said.
