Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, PANDEF Attack Northern Governors Over Opposition To 2023 Power Shift

The decision of the Northern States Governors Forum to oppose the call by its Southern counterpart that the Presidency should move to the South in 2023 has been criticised by groups comprising the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, Afenifere.

Stakeholders in the south said the northern governors’ position was against the unity of the country.

But the northern governors, who came up with this position stated at their meeting in Kaduna, said the call by the Southern Governors’ Forum was against the constitution of the country.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, described the position of the northern governors as unfortunate

It said the North benefited from the Nigerian union more than it contributed to it.

PANDEF, on its part, described northern governors’ opposition for power shift to the South as most ridiculous, cowardly and irresponsible.

National Publicity Secretary of PANDEF, Ken Robinson, said the attitude of the northern governors to the zoning of the Presidency to the south was insensitive.

In its reaction, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, said fairness and equity demand that Presidency should come to the South in 2023, adding the group was surprised at the position of the governors, saying some northern governors had said before that power should come to the South in 2023.

Vice President Osinbajo Warns That Nigerians Will Be Losers If Country Breaks Up

Speaking when he received the national executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), at the presidential villa in Abuja, Osinbajo said there is a need to promote the message of unity in the country, and advised journalists to be professional in the discharge of their duties.

According to a statement by the Vice President's spokesperson, Laolu Akande,  Osinbajo said, “It is important for us to continue to emphasise that the unity of this country is crucial, because if this country breaks up in any way or becomes the subject of what some people will like it to be, all of us will lose out. Petrol Subsidy Hits N905.27 Billion In Eight Months

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has said it spent the sum of N905.27 billion on petrol subsidy in eight months.

The subsidy, which the NNPC terms 'value shortfall or 'under-recovery’, came back in January this year as the government left the pump price of petrol unchanged at N162-N165 per litre, in the face of increase in global oil prices.

Inspiration FM recalls that the Federal Government had in March 2020 taken away petrol subsidy after reducing the pump price of the product to N125 per litre from N145 following the sharp drop in crude oil prices.

Available data from the NNPC showed that it incurred N25.37bn subsidy cost in January, N60.40bn in February, N111.97bn in March, and N126.30bn in April and N114.34bn in May.

NNPC said subsidy cost rose from N143.29bn in June to N175.32bn in July but fell to N149.28bn in August.
