Supreme Court Reserves Judgment As States Seek Refund Of Money Spent On Funding Judiciary

The 36 states of the federation have asked the supreme court to compel the federal government to refund about N66 billion spent on funding courts in the states.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari in May, signed the order granting financial autonomy to the legislature and the judiciary in the 36 states of the federation.

The order empowers the accountant-general of the federation to deduct funds for the state legislature and the judiciary from the federal allocations to the states.

In the suit filed by their respective attorneys-general, the states are contending the constitutionality of the executive order.

Augustine Alegeh, who represented the states, said this while making submissions in the suit seeking to quash the presidential executive order 10 of 2020, which mandates state governments to fund the judiciary.

Counsel to state attorney generals, Tijani Gazali opposed the suit.

Governor Sanwo-Olu Calls For Review Of Revenue Sharing Formula, Seeks Special Status For Lagos

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said there is urgent need for a new revenue sharing formula that is fair and equitable, reflecting the contribution of stakeholders to the common purse.

The governor also called for a special status for Lagos over its “huge financial obligations” to the national coffers.

Sanwo made these remarks at the opening of a two-day South-west zonal public hearing on the review of the revenue allocation formula organized by Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in Lagos.

The governor added that the states also wanted a revenue formula that enhances the capacity to deliver high-quality services and dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

INEC Takes Final Decision On Anambra Guber Election Today

The Independent National Electoral Commission will today hold an emergency security meeting in Abuja to take a final decision on the conduct of the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

There are fears that the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the state may hinder the conduct of the election.

Director, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, Victor Ayodele Aluko, said that the emergency Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting would among others deliberate on the way forward.

Asked if the INEC was considering postponing the election as a result of the insecurity in the state, he said the answer would come after today's meeting.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had last Wednesday expressed fears over the worsening security challenges in the state.

However, politicians and residents of Anambra yesterday expressed hope that the election would hold as planned despite the security challenges in the state.

Abductors Of Niger Perm Sec Demand N60m Ransom

Abductors of Niger State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Dr. Ibrahim Musa Garba, have demanded N60m ransom from his family.

Dr. Garba was kidnapped alongside his three year-old-son, on Friday at a wedding ceremony holding at his residence in Zungeru, Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State.

A family source said that the abductors called and  demanded  N60m ransom for his release and his three year-old-son.

"On Sunday evening, they called demanding N60m ransom. But after serious bargain, they pegged it down to N30m. So, they are still maintaining that N30m. But Family doesn't have that money. We would continue to bargain when next they called," he said.

The family appealed to the Niger state government to assist in rescuing the victim and his son unhurt.
