Presidency Advice To Yoruba Nation

The presidency has advised Yoruba Nation protesters to be mindful of the relationship with the outlawed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, gave the warning while reacting to the protest that both groups staged at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Brandishing placards and chanting protest songs, the self-determination agitators called on Nigerian leaders and stakeholders to rise up and fight for secession.

But in a statement, Shehu said while the right to protest is legitimate, it is improper for the demonstrators to associate with a terrorist group.

He said it is not unexpected for Nigerian diaspora groups to use the world’s largest platform – the United Nations General Assembly – to garner attention to their causes.

Highlighting the atrocities of IPOB, Shehu said the outlawed group had already announced a “50,000 strong paramilitary organisation”.

Shehu said IPOB regularly murders security services and innocent civilians, with a significant uptick of violent attacks this year while it is currently attempting to hold Nigerian states hostage with orders to stay at home under threat of terror.

UNICEF Says One Million Nigerian Children Are Afraid To Return To School Because Of Rising Insecurity

United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF, has said no fewer than one million children in Nigeria are scared to return to school because they fear being attacked by bandits, insurgents and kidnappers.

Disclosing this in a statement, UNICEF said Nigeria has recorded at least 20 attacks on schools in 2021, according for the abduction of over 1,000 children.

UNICEF's representative in Nigeria, Peter Hawkins, said the organization was worried over how insecurity is affecting school resumption, adding that despite government’s efforts, many children are not being reached due to inability to access technology and forced labour.

According to Hawkins, and I quote, “With each passing moment, countless amounts of opportunity are lost. We must put our children’s future first. We can and must tackle insecurity, stop attacks on education, and keep schools open. The clock is ticking for our young students", end quote.

Only Buhari Can Decide Who Becomes APC National Chairman, Says Governor Umahi

Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has said only President Muhammadu Buhari can decide who becomes the national chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking while receiving former Borno State Governor, who was in Ebonyi on consultations on contesting for the top APC position,

Governor Umahi said Buhari has a significant role to play on how the next APC chairman will emerge.

According to Governor Umahi, and I quote, “I thank you (Sheriff) for informing us of your decision to contest the APC national chairmanship, but the president, who is the leader of the party, has a role to play. He is the only one that can take a decision, but if it is thrown open, you are my choice. The president can say in the interest of the party, let another person be there; we will obey him", end quote.

Rivers Takes FIRS To Supreme Court Over VAT Collection

The Rivers State government has dragged the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Supreme Court over the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT).

In a suit filed by its Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State asked the Supreme Court to set aside the Court of Appeal’s order which directed the state to maintain status quo on the collection of VAT pending the determination of an appeal filed by the FIRS.

The Federal High Court, Port Harcourt issued an order restraining the FIRS from collecting VAT and Personal Income Tax (PIT) in Rivers state.

The agency later filed a stay of execution which was dismissed by the court.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, FIRS approached the Court of Appeal to take a second look at the matter.

A three-member panel of the appellate court in a ruling on Friday ordered all the parties in the suit to maintain the status quo on the matter.

The panel refrained the parties from taking any action on the lower court’s ruling which gave Rivers State government the right to collect VAT instead of the FIRS.

In its 10 grounds of appeal, the Rivers state government maintained that Justice Haruna Tsammani-led panel of the Appeal Court erred in law when it relied on the provisions of Section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution and the inherent jurisdiction of the appellate court to order all the parties to maintain status quo on the dispute.
