FG Proposes 3.13% Revenue Increase To Local Government Areas

As the debate for the review of revenue allocation amongst the three tiers of government gain traction, the federal government has proposed a 3.13 percent revenue increase to the local government.

By this proposal, the federal government will shade-off 2.03 percent of its allocation and the states will cede 1.1 percent all in favour of the local governments.

Disclosing this at a town-hall meeting on the review of the Nigeria’s vertical revenue allocation formula held in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, said the federal government is willing to concede more money to the LGAs, while also advocating that some of the items on the Exclusive List be taken off to ease some of its burden.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mohammed Bello, said a special funding status should be accorded to the FCT.

Senate Passes Electoral Act Amendment Bill, Approves Electronic Voting, Direct Primary

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and approved the electronic transmission of results.

The approval was given Tuesday when senators resumed plenary after a three-week recess.

A seven-man conference committee was constituted by the Upper chamber to meet with members of the House of Representatives Conference Committee and harmonize the differences in the Senate and House versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

A successful harmonization would mean the National Assembly has finished the process of amending the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The House of Representatives is also expected to follow suit by passing the harmonized bill.

Police To Get New Salary Structure

The Federal government has said that a new salary scale for the Nigeria Police would soon commence as the National Incomes and Wages Commission has submitted the proposal for an upward review.

The minister of police affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi, stated this when he appeared before the Joint National Assembly Committee on Police Affairs to defend the ministry’s 2021 budget performance and 2022 proposal.

He said the year under review started in the midst of challenges such as the effect of COVID-19 and #EndSARS protests, which inflicted serious social, moral, economic and security setbacks for the police.

The minister, however, said despite these challenges the ministry had remained focused and extended all necessary requests of support to the Nigeria Police in the fight against this criminality.
