Kano Court Postpones Ganduje’s Bribery Case Hearing to April 15

A Kano State High Court has set April 15, 2025, for the hearing of all pending preliminary objections in the bribery and misappropriation case involving Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), along with his wife, Hafsat Umar, and six others.

The Kano State Government has filed an eight-count charge against the defendants, accusing them of bribery, misappropriation, and the diversion of public funds worth billions of naira. Other defendants in the case include Abubakar Bawuro, Umar Abdullahi Umar, Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Limited, Safari Textiles Limited, and Lasage General Enterprises Limited.

During Thursday’s hearing, the prosecution counsel, Adeola Adedipe (SAN), informed the court of his readiness to proceed, stating that a motion had been filed seeking an extension of time to regularize a preliminary objection. Similarly, counsel for Ganduje, his wife, and Umar, Mrs. Lydia Oluwakemi-Oyewo, confirmed their readiness for the defense.

However, some defense counsels requested more time to finalize legal processes. Adekunle Taiye-Falola, representing the 3rd and 7th defendants, requested an extension to reply to a further and better affidavit on points of law, while Sunusi Musa (SAN), counsel for the 5th defendant, also moved a motion for an extension of time, supported by a 10-paragraph affidavit and written address.

While some defendants were prepared to proceed, others, including counsel for the 8th defendant, Ibrahim Aliyu-Nasarawa, requested additional time to file responses. Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, after considering the submissions, granted the applications for an extension of time and adjourned the case to April 15, 2025, for the hearing of all pending preliminary objections.

With public interest surrounding the case, the next hearing is expected to focus on resolving preliminary legal matters before proceeding to the substantive trial.

February 12, 2025 Tax Reform Bills Clear Second Reading in Parliament

Tax Reform Bills Clear Second Reading in Parliament

The four tax reform bills transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 have successfully scaled their second reading at the House of Representatives.

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, six months after the President forwarded the bills for legislative review, lawmakers in the Green Chamber debated the proposals. The bills were formulated based on the recommendations of the Taiwo Oyedele-led Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.

The proposed legislation includes:

  • Nigeria Tax Bill 2024
  • Tax Administration Bill
  • Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill
  • Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill

Having passed the second reading, the bills will now proceed to a public hearing for further scrutiny.

However, the tax reforms have faced strong opposition from various quarters, including northern governors and opposition politicians, who have demanded their withdrawal. Critics argue that the bills could impose excessive tax burdens and contradict constitutional provisions.

During the plenary session, lawmaker Sada Soli raised concerns that certain sections of the proposed reforms might conflict with the 1999 Constitution, particularly regarding derivation principles. He emphasized the need for clear definitions to prevent legal ambiguities.

Other lawmakers pointed out that the bills seek to amend 40 existing laws, urging that these amendments be thoroughly reviewed before passage. A key issue raised was multiple taxation on property transactions, as the proposed law mandates both buyers and sellers to pay taxes.

The bills now move to the next stage, where stakeholders will have the opportunity to present their views before further legislative action is taken.

FG to Address Drop Box Suspension for US Visa Renewals – Reps Member

The Nigerian government is actively working to resolve the suspension of the drop box service for US visa renewals. Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Oluwole Oke, assured that diplomatic efforts are underway to address the issue.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Oke stated that he would engage with US officials in Washington after his meetings in New York. He emphasized that the drop box service, which previously allowed eligible applicants to renew their visas without in-person interviews, was a convenience extended by the US but not a guaranteed right.

Recently, reports surfaced that the US had discontinued the drop box option for Nigerian visa renewals, requiring all applicants to undergo in-person interviews. The change comes amid stricter immigration policies under the Trump administration, which has intensified efforts to deport undocumented migrants.

Oke downplayed the development, noting that Nigeria does not offer a similar service to Americans renewing their Nigerian visas. He highlighted the principle of diplomatic reciprocity, explaining that visa policies are at the discretion of each country. He also revealed that Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, had not received any official communication from the US regarding the suspension.

The lawmaker expressed confidence that Nigeria's significance on the global stage would ensure a favorable resolution. He also suggested that the Trump administration might reconsider its stance on immigration policies in response to international concerns.

As of 2015, approximately 376,000 Nigerians were living in the US, making Nigeria the largest source of African immigration to the country. The US remains a top destination for Nigerian professionals and students, with remittances from the diaspora contributing over $20 billion annually to Nigeria’s economy.

Kenneth Okonkwo Resigns from Labour Party

Kenneth Okonkwo, Nollywood actor-turned-politician, has announced his resignation from the Labour Party, effective February 25, 2025.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Okonkwo cited the party’s internal crisis and lack of leadership structure as key reasons for his decision. He pointed out that, according to the Labour Party Constitution, the tenure of ward, local government, and state party executives is three years. However, he noted that since no congresses had been held within the stipulated time, their leadership had effectively expired.

He further argued that the former National Chairman, Julius Abure, and his National Working Committee (NWC) failed to conduct a legally recognized national convention, leading to INEC's refusal to recognize their leadership. According to him, the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, which was set up by the Labour Party National Executive Council (NEC) to organize fresh congresses and a convention, was the only legitimate structure. However, Abure and his allies allegedly obstructed its operations through legal battles.

Okonkwo, who is also a lawyer, criticized the party’s handling of preparations for the 2027 presidential election, stating that if Abure was committed to a southern candidate challenging President Bola Tinubu, he should cede the national chairmanship to the North.

Declaring that the party was now "non-existent" in its current form, Okonkwo said he had no choice but to resign. "Since the party is non-existent as presently constituted, I am constrained to resign my membership… I pledge my continued loyalty to the Nigerian people in all I will decide to do in my political future," he wrote.

He added that his resignation would take effect on February 25, 2025, the second anniversary of the 2023 presidential election, after which he would align with like-minded Nigerians to work toward good governance.

Okonkwo’s exit marks another significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as the Labour Party continues to face internal disputes.
