WHO Warns That Rich Countries May Start Hoarding Vaccines

The World Health Organization, WHO, has warned that wealthy countries may start hoarding COVID-19 vaccines again, threatening global supplies as they seek to keep up stocks to fight the new Omicron coronavirus variant.

The comments were made by the agency's vaccine director, Kate O'Brien.

The WHO and vaccine charity, GAVI run an international dose-sharing programme with rich countries but with the new variant, supplies to poor nations could reduce.

O'Brien said and I quote, "As we head into whatever the Omicron situation is going to be, there is risk that the global supply is again going to revert to high-income countries hoarding vaccines" as they seek to protect their ability to inoculate their citizens''.

Presidency Says Buhari Has Not Rejected Electoral Act Amendment Bill

President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to decide on whether to assent or veto the Electoral Act amendment bill 2021.

Senior special assistant to the president on National Assembly Matters, Honourable Umar El-Yakub, stated that the communication between the president and the National Assembly is not a secret affair, adding that such communication would have been read on the floor of the parliament.

According to the Presidential aide, "The long and short of it is that there has never been any communication of such; there is nothing like that. If there is any communication, it will be disclosed publicly at the National Assembly.

"We all need to be more responsible; we don't need to unnecessarily overheat the polity. What I can tell you is that if you are doing your calculations right, you know that the president constitutionally has 30 days to sign the bill. The bill was transmitted on the 19th November so the president has 10 more days," added E-Yakub.
