NLC Suspends Protests, Says Talks With Federal Government Continue

THE Nigeria Labour Congress has suspended its nationwide protests slated for Thursday and February 2.

The congress took the decision at its National Executive Council meeting held virtually on Tuesday.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who disclosed this at a press conference hinged the decision to suspend the protests on the reversal of the Federal Government’s plan to stop the subsidy on petrol.

Before the announcement, the congress had told The PUNCH on Monday that it would continue with the preparations for the protests.

Wabba stated that NEC of the NLC had given directives for the mobilization of workers and citizens for the national protests if the Federal Government refused to reverse the planned hike in the pump price of petrol.

But justifying the union’s decision, the NLC president said the congress dropped the planned protests “following the reversal  by government.”

He said, “At the peak of very rigorous mobilization of Nigerians by the Nigeria Labour Congress and a host of her civil society allies, the government through the Minister of Finance yesterday, January 24, 2022, made a public announcement reversing the plans to increase petrol pump price.

“The position of the government was also officially communicated to the congress with calls for further engagement. Following the reversal and re-approach by the government, the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress met this morning virtually to consider the new position of the government.

“The NEC after vigorous debates took a decision to suspend the planned nationwide protest scheduled for January 27, 2022, and the national protest scheduled for February 2, 2022.”

The labour leader said the congress had communicated the decision to its civil society allies who have stood stoically behind Nigerian workers in their quest for social and economic justice.

The NLC said it would continue to engage with the government on the very critical issues of ensuring local refining of petroleum, creation of sustainable jobs and affordable price of petrol for Nigerian workers and people.

It commended the workers, people and the civil society allies for “their unwavering solidarity and support during this struggle.”

Meanwhile, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday met with heads of security and paramilitary agencies, asking them to do more towards ending smuggling of petroleum products out of Nigeria.

“I know, individually, these organisations have been carrying out their responsibilities on this but I think that we are coming into a special moment. Our situation is such that we cannot afford anymore to allow this smuggling business to continue because the cost is very huge and debilitating to our people.

“At a point, I will hold a meeting with the National Security Adviser (Major General Babagana Monguno, retd.) who is supposed to coordinate the entire security apparatus for protecting our borders. I will also hold some engagement with the military, especially the Navy, because a lot of our products are shipped out to other countries through the water ways. At the end of the day, what we hope to achieve is to minimise or where possible eliminate the incidents of smuggling of petroleum products that we import into the country for our people.

“The figures of what we consume in the country continue to fluctuate. At one point, it was almost 100 million litres per day and, surely, this is difficult to believe that we consume almost 100 million litres per day within our borders. Certainly, a good percentage of it goes out.”

The NURTW dissociated itself from any act that is capable of promoting bloodshed in Lagos.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos has apologised to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the recent deadly clash among union members in the Idumota area of the state.

It would be recalled that two persons were feared killed during a clash between two factional members of the transport union last week.

The crisis also paralysed commercial activities in the area as hoodlums fired gunshots and brandished cutlasses.

“According to reports and viral Videos in the public domain, it is certain that an unconfirmed number of lives were lost during this ugly incident and the union will not rest until faces behind these actions are been fished out.

“We want to assure you that NURTW is not in support of such conduct and the ugly incident that occurred at idumota axis of Lagos Island and we are disassociating the body from any act that is capable of promoting spilling of blood and paralysing businesses as witnessed a few days ago in Lagos.

“In ensuring that appropriate actions are been taken to end such conduct going forward, the union will be working with the Lagos State Government, security agencies, and other stakeholders to investigate as well as go after persons or groups that are behind this re-occurring barbaric display that led to the loss of lives and several properties in the community.

“The NURTW has followed this incident that brought Lagos island to a chaotic situation, posing danger to life and properties and grounding business activities in the area. We hereby assure Lagosians, as the national body of NURTW, that something will be done to end such conduct. We cannot continue this way, putting a bad image on the entirety of the Union, this is unacceptable.

“The union is tendering its unreserved apology to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, entire Lagosians over inconvenience the ugly incident may have caused the state, its law-abiding people, businesses that suffered the unrest, most.

“We commend the state government on the quick intervention that brought calm to the community and the body is assuring the government that all erring members who took to violence instead of peace will not go unpunished.”

Court Issues Arrest Warrant Against Former-Petroleum Minister, Diezani

A Federal High Court, Abuja has issued an arrest warrant against the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, believed to be residing in the UK.

Justice Bolaji Olajuwon granted the request after counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Farouk Abdullah, made an oral application.

EFCC said its investigations revealed that the former Minister, who is facing several money-laundering allegations, has remained in her hideout in the UK and refused to return to the country to enter her plea to charges against her.

Abdullah told the court that all efforts by the agency to get Diezani extradited back to the country proved abortive.

He stressed that the warrant would enable the EFCC to persuade the International Police (INTERPOL) to arrest Diezani and also help the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to facilitate her extradition.

After he had listened to the application, Justice Olajuwon granted it as prayed, even as he adjourned the case indefinitely to await the arrest and extradition of the Defendant.
