The field of those aspiring to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 continues to grow as a former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has said he will be running for president if the Peopleās Democratic Party zones the ticket to the south.
Obi, who was the running mate of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election, disclosed his intention in a tweet today.
The 60-year old consummate businessman turned politician, who is renowned for his sound grasp of economics, it is recalled, enriched the 2019 presidential race, with his detailed analysis of how the Atiku presidency will usher Nigeria into economic bliss.
Though the PDP lost to President Buhari in that election, Obi left a good impression in the mind of Nigerians, who will now be aroused with his declaration for the 2023 presidential race.
Announcing his intention, Peter Obi, wrote and I quote, āYes, I will step into the field to contest for the opportunity to serve this great country as President if my party PDP zones the ticket to the south. But if it is thrown open, Nigerians will also hear from meāā, end of quote.
However, it remains to be seen if the PDP will zone the presidential ticket to the south, given the growing clamour for the two main political parties to narrow it down to the zone as the incumbent President Buhari is from the north and would have completed eight years in office by May 2023.
Reacting to Peter Obiās declaration, a civil society leader, Achike Chude, said he was excited by the profile and prospects of the former Anambra State governor.
