Rivers Crisis: Wike Urges Fubara to ‘Obey Court Judgment for Peace’

Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called on his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, to respect the rule of law to restore peace in the state. Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during a televised interview.

There is peace when you obey the rule of law. There is peace when you obey court judgments,” said Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

His comments follow the escalating tensions in Rivers State, fueled by a growing feud between Wike and Fubara. The conflict recently intensified around the local government elections in the state.

A court ruling had ordered the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) not to provide security for the elections and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold the voter register from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). Despite this, the Fubara administration proceeded with the elections last Saturday.

Following the elections, the newly elected chairpersons and councillors were sworn in on Monday, sparking a fresh wave of violence. Three local government secretariats were torched and properties were destroyed.

Fubara has since pledged to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice, setting up a panel on Tuesday to investigate the attacks.

However, Wike maintained that the path to peace lies in upholding the court's ruling. “Obey the court judgment, and let the rule of law prevail. Ignoring the law leads to anarchy,” he warned.

Reflecting on his own tenure as governor, Wike emphasized the importance of respecting legal rulings. “I always obeyed the rule of law. Once you disregard court judgments, you invite chaos and violence,” he added.

Former Senator Melaye Emerges Victorious in Six-Year Legal Battle Against Federal Government

Former Senator Dino Melaye, who represented Kogi West Senatorial District, has been cleared in a long-standing legal case against the Federal Government.

The case, which began in February 2018, involved accusations that Melaye falsely implicated Edward Onoja, the then Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in an assassination plot. After years of legal proceedings and delays, including the passing of Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu, the presiding judge, in December 2017, the case has finally come to an end.

Mexican Mayor Assassinated Just Days After Taking Office

The mayor of a city in southern Mexico has been murdered just days after taking office, authorities confirmed on Sunday, adding to the troubling trend of violence against politicians in the country. Alejandro Arcos, the newly-elected mayor of Chilpancingo, was killed less than a week after assuming office. Guerrero State governor, Evelyn Salgado, expressed her outrage on social media, though no further details were provided regarding the circumstances of his death.

Local media reports suggest that Arcos was killed, although there has been no official confirmation. Arcos, who was elected in June as part of an opposition coalition, represented the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). The PRI condemned his murder as a "cowardly crime" and called for swift justice, stating, "Enough of violence and impunity! The people of Guerrero do not deserve to live in fear."

Arcos’ death follows the assassination of another city official, Francisco Tapia, just days earlier. According to PRI president Alejandro Moreno, both officials had been in office for less than a week. "They were young and honest leaders who aimed to bring progress to their community," Moreno shared on social media.

Guerrero, one of Mexico's most violence-stricken and impoverished states, has been ravaged by years of cartel-related violence, as rival groups battle for control of drug production and trafficking routes. The state, home to the once-glamorous Acapulco, saw 1,890 murders in 2023 alone.

Nationwide, Mexico has witnessed more than 450,000 murders and tens of thousands of disappearances since the government launched its military crackdown on drug trafficking in 2006. Politicians, especially those at the local level, have often been caught in the crossfire of this ongoing conflict.

Addressing the escalating violence remains a critical challenge for Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president, who took office on October 1st. Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City, has vowed to continue her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s "hugs, not bullets" policy, focusing on social reform to address the root causes of crime. She is expected to reveal her security strategy on Tuesday.

In the lead-up to the June elections, violence targeted politicians across the country, with official records showing at least 24 political figures were murdered during the campaign season.
