Court Reinstates Shaibu as Edo Deputy Governor; Assembly Appeals Decision

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has reinstated Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, months after his impeachment by the state assembly. In the Wednesday judgment, Justice Omotosho declared the impeachment illegal and unconstitutional, citing gross violations of the Constitution.

In addition to restoring Shaibu, the court ordered that his salaries and allowances be paid from April, when he was impeached. The court also directed Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to reinstate Shaibu's security details.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) has formally requested Senate President Godswill Akpabio to urge Chief Whip Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) to resign from the party and join either the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) or any opposition party.

The APC, through a letter signed by National Chairman Alhaji Umar Ganduje and National Secretary Senator Suŕajueen Basiru, also removed Senator Ali Ndume as Chief Whip of the 10th Senate, replacing him with Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North).

The letter to Akpabio expressed concerns that Ndume’s criticisms of President Bola Tinubu were inappropriate and not supportive of the Federal Government. The request received unanimous support from APC Senators during a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Court Declines Emefiele’s Request To Travel Abroad For Medical Checkup

Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has denied an application by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, seeking permission to travel to the United Kingdom for a follow-up medical checkup.

In his ruling, Justice Muazu stated, among other reasons, that Emefiele did not provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the medical trip was necessary and unavoidable. The judge noted that although Emefiele claimed to have received an invitation for medical treatment in the UK, he did not present a copy of this invitation to the court.

Furthermore, Justice Muazu pointed out that Emefiele failed to establish that his medical condition could not be adequately addressed within the country. Additionally, the judge emphasized that Emefiele is currently facing charges in three other courts, which weighed against granting permission for him to travel abroad.
