Fubara Denies Promising To Pay N80,000 Minimum Wage

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has denied reports claiming he proposed an N80,000 minimum wage for workers in the state and local government areas. The denial came in response to circulating online reports suggesting the governor had made such a promise.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, Chief Press Secretary Nelson Chukwudi labeled the reports as unverified and false. "The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to claims circulating in online media that the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has proposed to pay a new minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants in the state and local government areas," the statement read.

"Ordinarily, we would not have responded to this fake news, but for the wrong impression it would create in the minds of the public, especially civil servants in the state. Therefore, it is important to state that the unverified claims being circulated by Newsweekng.com, and titled: 'Breaking News: Governor Fubara Proposes N80,000 minimum wage' are totally false and misleading. The general public, and particularly civil servants in the state, are advised to discountenance the false claims in the online media platform. The Rivers State Government will make its position on the issue known in due course."

Labour Party Celebrates Peter Obi’s 63rd Birthday: “When We Look at You, We See Hope”

In a heartfelt message, Barrister Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party, along with the party's leadership, extended warm congratulations to Mr. Peter Obi on his 63rd birthday.

Abure emphasized the significance of this milestone, noting that birthdays are a time to reflect on one's journey and accomplishments. "Birthdays are special occasions," Abure remarked, "but they are even more profound when you consider the path one has walked and the blessings received along the way. As the psalmist said, 'Count your blessings, name them one by one, it would surprise you what the Lord has done for you.'"

He praised Obi as a beacon of hope and a leader with a clear vision. "When we look at you, we see the blessings of God all around you; we see hope amidst hopelessness, a new Nigeria despite current challenges," he said. "You are a dogged fighter, a unifier, a pacifist, and a leader with both vision and conscience."

The statement also touched on the struggles faced by Nigerians, reaffirming faith in a brighter future. "Although we face significant challenges and suffering, we remain hopeful and believe that God is still in control," Abure said.

Abure expressed wishes for Obi's continued health and success, affirming the party's celebration of his achievements and optimism for his future contributions to the nation. "Once again, we congratulate you on this auspicious birthday occasion," Abure concluded.

Why NLC Accepted the N70,000 Minimum Wage

On Thursday, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), explained why the organized labour accepted President Bola Tinubu's proposal for a new minimum wage of N70,000. Speaking to reporters at the State House after meeting with the President, Ajaero stated that the unions agreed to the offer due to the additional incentives attached and the President's promise to review the minimum wage every three years, a significant improvement over the previous arrangement.

President Tinubu approved the N70,000 minimum wage on Thursday, as confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The announcement was made during a meeting with organized labour leaders in Abuja. This meeting followed an initial discussion between the President and labour leaders the previous week.

Once approved by the National Assembly, the new minimum wage will replace the previous N30,000 minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024.

Onanuga shared the news on his official X handle, @aonanuga, at 03:31 pm, stating, “Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years. President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals in paying the minimum wage.”

The labour leaders expressed their gratitude to President Tinubu for his gesture, and the President also committed to addressing the demands of university unions regarding unpaid salaries for four months.
