Obama Endorses Kamala Harris For US President

Former US President Barack Obama endorsed fellow Democrat Kamala Harris' bid for the White House on Friday, giving a significant boost to her campaign against Donald Trump in the upcoming November presidential election.

"Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend Kamala Harris. We told her we think she’ll make a fantastic President of the United States, and that she has our full support," Obama announced on the social media platform X. "At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope you’ll join us."

Obama was one of the last prominent Democrats to endorse Harris, who had already received backing from President Joe Biden on Sunday. This endorsement will further strengthen Harris' campaign, which has seen a surge of support since her last-minute entry into the race.

Harris, 59, entered the election after weeks of controversy surrounding 81-year-old Biden. His poor debate performance against Trump heightened concerns over his mental fitness and low polling numbers, leading him to withdraw from the race.

The nation's first female vice president, Harris is aiming to make history again in November. She delivered a fierce critique of Trump and his "extremist" Republicans during a speech to teachers on Thursday.

Trump appeared caught off guard by Harris' momentum, refusing to schedule a debate with her, stating it would be "inappropriate" until she was officially named the Democratic nominee. "Democrats very well could still change their minds," said Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung.

Harris, a former top prosecutor in California, challenged her opponent on X, questioning, "What happened to ‘any time, any place?'" She had previously expressed her readiness for a potential September 10 debate, saying, "I’m ready. So let’s go."

Chaos Erupts as Fubara and Wike Supporters Clash in Rivers

A baby reportedly lost consciousness after being tear-gassed on Wednesday during a clash between supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and loyalists of ex-governor Nyesom Wike in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The clash occurred during a government medical outreach in the Eliozu community. Eyewitnesses reported that the trouble began when officials from the state Ministry of Health were conducting a medical outreach for women at the Eliozu Health Centre. Supporters allegedly loyal to factional Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, arrived at the venue to investigate the gathering. The venue is located near Amaewhule’s residence, which leads the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike.

Supporters of the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Chijioke Ihunwo, who are loyal to Fubara, reportedly prevented them from accessing the venue, resulting in a heated argument and subsequent clash. Stones were thrown, and the medical outreach was disrupted.

Anti-riot policemen arrived at the scene and fired tear gas to disperse the opposing groups. During the mayhem, a child was tear-gassed and became unconscious. The medical outreach was then relocated to a state-owned facility at the Waterlines axis of Port Harcourt.

Reacting to the incident, Obio/Akpor CTC Chairman, Chijioke Ihunwo, accused Amaewhule of leading policemen to disrupt the outreach. Ihunwo stated, “This morning there was an incident at the Eliozu Health Centre where the former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule led some security men to disrupt a programme by the Ministry of Health. A few minutes later, some policemen came and started beating up our women, shooting tear gas at pregnant women who were at the Health Centre. We want to say that Obio/Akpor Local Government Area will not be under siege. We want to call on the President, Bola Tinubu, that the Inspector General of Police and the Minister of the FCT are tarnishing the image of your government.”

Nigerian Governors Hold Closed-Door Meeting Amid Planned Protest

Governors from all 36 states of the federation convened in Abuja on Wednesday night for a critical meeting, weeks after the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local government areas across the country.

Gathering under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) at the NGF Secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), several governors attended in person, including Lawal Dauda (Zamfara), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Alex Otti (Abia). Enugu Governor Peter Mbah and Borno Governor Babagana Zulum were represented by their deputies.

While the meeting's agenda was not disclosed and no media briefing followed the early Thursday conclusion, the gathering marked the first public meeting of the forum since President Bola Tinubu approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

In their previous meeting, the governors had pledged to ensure a fair minimum wage for Nigerian workers. This session was expected to address the upcoming nationwide protest against bad governance planned by youths for August.
