Tinubu Approves 300% Salary Rise For Judicial Officers

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill into law, as revealed by Senator Basheer Lado, the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja.

In March, President Tinubu had submitted a bill titled "A Bill for an Act to Prescribe the Salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits of judicial office holders in Nigeria and for related matters," seeking to revise the salaries of judicial officers, to the House of Representatives for consideration. By June, the National Assembly approved the bill, which included a 300% salary increase for judicial officers at both federal and state levels.

Lado emphasized that this move demonstrates the President's strong commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers, similar to his recent action in prioritizing the new National Minimum Wage Bill of N70,000 during a Federal Executive Council meeting.

The new Act prescribes updated salaries, allowances, and other benefits for judicial officers to align with current realities. It also amends the Certain Political, Public, and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act, No.6, 2002 (as amended) by removing provisions relating to judicial office holders from the previous legislation.

Lado praised the signing of the bill as a significant achievement and a clear indication of President Tinubu's dedication to improving conditions for Nigeria’s workforce. He highlighted the President's commitment to ensuring that judicial officers, as well as other salary earners in vital roles, receive fair compensation and recognition.

This decision, Lado noted, not only strengthens the integrity of the justice system but also sets a new standard for leadership that values the hard work and sacrifices of all Nigerian workers. He added that under President Tinubu’s administration, the welfare of workers has become a central focus, with policies aimed at uplifting lives, upholding the dignity of labor, and ensuring just rewards for those who serve the nation.

Lado also commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Rt. Hon. Abass Tajudeen, and the 10th National Assembly for their efforts in passing the bill. He urged judicial office holders to continue their work in delivering swift and fair justice, reinforcing the judiciary as the hope of the common man in Nigeria.

Federal Government to Foreign Powers: Stay Out Of Our Internal Affairs

The Federal Government issued a stern warning yesterday to foreign nations, urging them to refrain from meddling in Nigeria’s internal matters. This caution follows reports of foreign flags being displayed during ongoing protests against economic hardship, particularly in northern states like Kano, Kaduna, and Zamfara, as well as the arrest of several foreigners alleged to be sponsoring the demonstrations.

Despite the protests subsiding in most areas, they continued yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where thugs infiltrated the crowds, attacking both protesters and journalists. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army confirmed that it had detained the soldier responsible for shooting a 16-year-old boy in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Tuesday, noting that an investigation is underway.

In other developments, the governments of Plateau and Bauchi states, which had imposed curfews during the height of the protests, began easing restrictions as calm returned to the regions.

During a briefing with members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar emphasized the importance of maintaining positive international relations but stressed that Nigeria will not tolerate foreign interference in its domestic affairs. Tuggar highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to address the country's challenges and urged foreign entities to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

"While the government is actively working on various reforms to address the issues facing our nation, it’s crucial to remind everyone that no country allows foreign interference in its internal matters. Nigeria is no exception," Tuggar stated. "We will take appropriate action against any foreign entity found to be supporting the protests or interfering in our internal affairs."

He also called for continued collaboration from the international community to support Nigeria's efforts in overcoming current challenges and improving the lives of its citizens.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding the rights to peaceful assembly and free expression. He also pledged to investigate the recent violence, ensuring those responsible are brought to justice. Idris expressed gratitude to the diplomatic community for their support, assuring them that the unrest had subsided and that the government's policy interventions would soon bring positive outcomes.

In a related development, the government of Bauchi State announced the easing of the 24-hour curfew in Katagum, offering relief to residents who had been under strict lockdown due to deteriorating security conditions in the area.

Security Operatives Raid NLC Headquarters, Seize Documents

Heavily armed security forces raided the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja on Thursday evening, the union reported. According to the NLC, the operatives, who arrived at Labour House around 8:30 pm, broke into the building and searched the bookshop on the 2nd floor, seizing hundreds of books and publications.

Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, stated that the security personnel claimed they were searching for seditious materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests. The NLC has not yet been able to fully assess what was taken during the raid, which occurred six days after the protests began.

The NLC condemned the raid, calling it a significant decline in the conduct of security operations in Nigeria. The union demanded the immediate withdrawal of the security forces from its premises, emphasizing that the operatives had no legal warrant for the invasion, which took place late at night. The NLC noted that even during the darkest periods of military rule, its secretariats were never subjected to such treatment.

In a press release, the NLC highlighted that just earlier in the day, its National Executive Council had condemned the excessive force used by security agents against protesters across the country and the mass arrests of perceived protest leaders. The council also expressed concern over the reckless use of the term "treason" to describe the protests. The raid on Labour House later that night was unexpected.

The NLC warned that this incident signals a dangerous erosion of democratic rights, including freedom of speech and peaceful protest, and called on the international community to take note of Nigeria's slide toward becoming a police state. The union also expressed fears that the situation could worsen, especially given recent experiences of violent state repression, including an attempted assassination of the NLC President.

As a precaution, the NLC has instructed its staff to stay away from Labour House until it can ensure that no incriminating materials or harmful substances were planted by the security forces. The union is demanding an international investigation into the raid and has called for the immediate return of all seized materials. If the harassment continues, the NLC warned it may call on its members to stay home until their safety is guaranteed.
