Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke Charged with Bribery Offenses by UK Police

Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Minister of Petroleum in Nigeria, is facing charges of bribery offences, as revealed by the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA) on August 22, 2023. The charges are linked to her tenure as Nigeria's oil minister from 2010 to 2015.

Andy Kelly, Head of the NCA's International Corruption Unit, spoke about the allegations, emphasising the suspicion that Alison-Madueke abused her authority in Nigeria and received financial incentives for awarding multi-million-pound contracts. Kelly noted that these charges mark a significant step in an extensive and intricate international investigation.

The NCA's claims suggest that the former minister gained advantages amounting to at least £100,000 ($127,000) in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights, lavish family vacations, and the use of multiple London properties. Kelly pointed out the severity of bribery as a form of corruption capable of fostering serious criminal activities and causing profound harm to developing nations.

The charges brought against Alison-Madueke encompass financial benefits, details of furnished properties, renovation work, staff arrangements, payment of private school fees, and luxury gifts from esteemed designer outlets like Cartier and Louis Vuitton.

According to Reuters, the UK National Crime Agency announced that Alison-Madueke is scheduled to appear in court on October 2, 2023, as she faces the legal consequences of the bribery-related charges.

African Union Suspends Niger Over Military Coup

The African Union announced on Tuesday that it had suspended Niger, with the suspension set to remain in place until civilian governance is reinstated in the country.

Additionally, the AU expressed its intention to evaluate the consequences of any potential armed intervention in Niger, a nation facing significant challenges in the Sahel region.

The Peace and Security Council of the AU has tasked the AU Commission with assessing the economic, social, and security implications that would arise from deploying a standby force in Niger. The results of this assessment will be presented to the Council, as the issue of intervention in Niger has led to divergent opinions within the bloc.

The recent political upheaval in Niger occurred when military officers orchestrated the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26. The response from the West African regional organisation ECOWAS, or the Economic Community of West African States, was to threaten the use of force to reinstate Bazoum.

ECOWAS has prepared to activate a "standby force" as a last resort to restore democratic governance in Niger. While the possibility of military intervention looms, diplomatic solutions remain under consideration.

The African Union's recent meeting addressed the ongoing crisis in Niger, revealing the differences of opinion within the organisation concerning potential military involvement. The situation has raised international concerns, particularly regarding the escalating jihadist insurgencies in the Sahel region, which have affiliations with groups like Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Niger's recent coup adds to a trend of political instability in West Africa, with the country becoming the fourth in the region since 2020 to experience a coup, following Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali. The leaders of the coups in Burkina Faso and Mali have issued strong warnings that any external military intervention in Niger would be perceived as a "declaration of war" against their respective countries.

This coup marks the fifth in Niger's history since gaining independence from France in 1960. The 2021 election of Mohamed Bazoum was a significant milestone, as it represented the nation's first peaceful transition of power.

However, the aftermath of the recent coup has raised international concerns about Bazoum's well-being, as he and his family have been detained at the presidential residence since the events unfolded.

Speculated Collaboration Between Atiku, Peter Obi, And Kwankwaso Dismissed By LP

Umar Farouk, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, has refuted recent claims suggesting a potential alliance between the party's Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and political figures Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Farouk unequivocally stated that the party has no intentions of merging with any other political entity.

Reports had surfaced indicating that Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria People’s Party were engaged in discussions aimed at establishing a potent coalition to challenge the current ruling party's dominance.

Farouk swiftly dismissed these claims, emphasising the lack of validity in the reports. He underscored that while Peter Obi possesses the right to form associations as a candidate, the Labour Party remains resolute in its decision not to pursue a merger with any other political group.

"Inaccurate," Farouk asserted, addressing the rumours. "It seems to be a product of creative imagination. The party has not received any such proposition. If any actions are underway, they might be on the part of Peter Obi as an individual candidate, within his rights to engage with whomever he chooses. However, as a collective party, merging with another political entity is not under consideration, and the Labour Party stands firm in its commitment against any merger."

Echoing Farouk's stance, Tai Obasi, media aide to Peter Obi, also weighed in on the matter during an interview. Obasi categorically denied any discussions regarding a potential merger involving his principal. He underscored that, at present, the primary focus is on awaiting the tribunal's judgment, making the merger idea premature.

"Such reports hold no factual basis," Obasi stated. "Why would merger talks even arise without the tribunal's decision? Are they contemplating merging as opposition factions? It seems unlikely. My principal, Peter Obi, has not indicated such discussions to me. While we respect Atiku and Kwankwaso, there has been no mention of merger talks on our part."

Obasi concluded by emphasising that there is no substantive foundation to the claims of a merger involving Peter Obi and other political figures. As the situation currently stands, the notion of a merger remains unsubstantiated and unsupported.
