WHO And US Health Officials Are Investigating A New COVID-19 Variant

The World Health Organization and US health officials stated on Friday that they are actively monitoring a new variation of Covid-19, BA.2.86, but the potential impact is still unknown.

The WHO designated the new variation as one under surveillance “due to the large number (more than 30) of spike gene mutations it carries,” according to a pandemic advisory issued late Thursday.

The variation has only been found in Israel, Denmark, and the United States so far.

In a message on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, the US Centers for Disease Control stated it is also closely watching the strain.

According to the WHO, there are only four known sequences of the variation.

“The potential impact of the BA.2.86 mutations is currently unknown and is being carefully evaluated,” the WHO added.

Subsidy Removal: There Are No Quick Fixes For Nigeria’s Challenges — President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu was brutally honest yesterday, warning Nigerians that there are no quick fixes to the country’s festering problems and urging them to suffer with the country in light of the pains caused by the removal of petroleum subsidies.

He did, however, promise that after today’s ordeal, tomorrow will be better.

He made the remarks in Abuja at the launch of Brutally Frank, a 688-page autobiography written by former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark.

President Tinubu stated that the answer to Nigeria’s crisis cannot be as simple as instant coffee, comparing the country’s current situation to the agony of childbirth, but that joy will follow.

He expressed hope that the Federal Government’s palliatives will help to alleviate the hardship and trauma.

If Diplomacy Fails, We Will Attack Niger — ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, declared yesterday in Accra, Ghana, that if all efforts to overturn the coup in Niger Republic fail, it will not hesitate to invade the country.

This comes as the German government stated its support for European Union sanctions put on the country’s military dictatorship.

It will be remembered that at its second extraordinary meeting in Abuja last week, ECOWAS Heads of State and Government activated its standing force should the Niger junta refuse to restore to power the country’s expelled president, Mohamed Bazoum.

The warning came as member-state defense officials gathered in Ghana’s capital to plan the next course of action in Niger and discuss the details of the standby force. The meeting is still going on today.

“Let no one doubt that if all else fails, the valiant forces of West Africa…are ready to respond to the call of duty.”

He cited previous ECOWAS deployments in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and elsewhere as examples of military readiness.

Court Strikes Out FG’s Firearms Charge Against Emefiele

The Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed the illegal possession of firearms charges brought against the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by the Federal Government.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo decided on Thursday in response to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mohammed Abubakar's application to withdraw the two-count charge.

Abubakar's decision to withdraw the charges was based on Section 108 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

In defence, Emefiele's counsel, J.B. Daodu, argued that the prosecution's withdrawal of the charge should be contingent on the government's adherence to the court's July 25 ruling, which granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million.

In his ruling, Justice Oweibo approved the Federal Government's request for withdrawal. However, he expressed strong criticism of the Government's behaviour, stating;

"The prosecution's actions have demonstrated a lack of respect for the rule of law. Keeping the case on the court's docket while showing disrespect to the court serves no purpose."

So, the charge was dismissed because of insufficient investigation.
