EFCC Initiates Extradition Proceedings For Diezani, Secures Arrest Warrant

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained an arrest warrant as it begins the extradition process of former Minister of Petroleum Resources Diezani Alison-Madueke from the United Kingdom back to Nigeria to face the 13-count charges bordering on money laundering levelled against her by the anti-graft agency.

The Commission further revealed that the charges for which Diezani is answerable cover jurisdictions in Dubai – the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Nigeria.

Its Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development. The EFCC alleged that the former Minister stole 2.5 billion dollars from the Nigerian government while she was a Minister.

She had appeared before the Westminster Magistrates Court in London over an alleged 100,000 pounds bribe.

There are feelers that an informal interagency collaboration between the EFCC and the UK’s NCA led to the ongoing trial of Diezani in London.

Documents From Tinubu’s Chicago University Delivered To Atiku’s Legal Team

The Chicago State University (CSU) has released the school documents of President Bola Tinubu to the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku had requested the documents to back his allegation of forgery of the CSU certificate against Tinubu, to say Tinubu was not qualified to run for the election, which he won.

The President had supplied certificates from the Chicago State University to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to secure eligibility to participate in the election.

On Saturday, a United States of America court ordered CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records for verification and in support of Atiku’s petition challenging the result of the 2023 presidential poll.

In a judgment, Justice Nancy Maldonado dismissed the objection Tinubu raised against Atiku’s request and expressly ordered that the CSU submit the academic records to Atiku.

Subsequently, the university presented to Atiku’s legal team a cache of documents connected to the President’s education at the institution and copies of certificates with redacted names issued to other persons about the same time the Nigerian President finished school in 1979.

Nigerian Labour Unions Suspend Nationwide Strike

In a pivotal turn of events, the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Union (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have temporarily called off the nationwide strike they had planned in response to the Federal Government's perceived inaction regarding their demands, which were fueled by the considerable hardships experienced by Nigerians due to the fuel subsidy removal.

To find a resolution and prevent the strike, the government invited organized labour, with the meeting chaired by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Following extensive discussions on Sunday, October 1, 2023, the leadership of organized labour committed to convene with their internal bodies to assess whether to proceed with the strike or cancel it altogether. After further deliberations culminating on Monday, October 2, 2023, the union temporarily suspended the strike for 30 days.

In a joint statement, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, TUC President Festus Osifo, and Secretary General Nuhu Toro, the Federal Government has been urged to address the issue of withheld salaries for university staff.

"The NLC and TUC have decided to postpone the planned Nationwide strike, initially set to commence on Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023, for 30 days."

"As of September, Federal Government workers will receive a wage increment of N35,000 (thirty-five thousand Naira) per month, pending the finalization of a new national minimum wage law."

"The outstanding Salaries and Wages of Tertiary Education workers in Federal-owned educational institutions will be the subject of further discussions with the Ministry of Labour and Employment," the statement read.

Tribunal sacks Nasarawa gov, declares PDP’s Ombugadu winner

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Nasarawa State has nullified the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress, and declared PDP’s David Ombugadu as the winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in the state.

Justice Ezekiel Ajayi, the tribunal’s chairman, delivered the verdict virtually and proclaimed Ombugadu of the PDP to be the legitimately elected governor of Nasarawa State.

Sule had been taken to court by Ombugadu to contest the Independent National Electoral Commission’s determination that he had won the election.

He claimed to the tribunal that, notably in the forms EC8B of Gayam and Chiroma Wards of Lafia Local Government Area, his actual votes had been unfairly lowered while Abdullahi Sule’s APC votes had been inflated to help Sule win. The tribunal held that the petitioners duly proved their petition.

The tribunal in its decision deducted the incorrect votes added to Sule and accordingly added back the votes which were reduced from the overall votes of David Ombugadu as evident on the certified copies of the polling units results (forms EC8A) tendered by the Petitioners.

The tribunal added that throughout the trial, the first, second, and third respondents did not present any sets of forms EC8A in opposition.

In the end, the tribunal determined that the petition had validity and as a result, granted the petitioners’ requests for relief.

The tribunal, therefore, ordered that the certificate of return issued to Alhaji Sule of the APC be withdrawn and issued to Dr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu as the validly elected governor of Nasarawa State.
