Appeal Court Affirms Natasha Winner Of Kogi Central Senatorial Seat

It has been reported that the Kogi State National and State Assemblies Tribunal declared Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan the duly elected candidate in the recent election.

On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan's election victory for the Kogi Central Senatorial seat, which took place in February.

In a judgment rendered by a three-member panel, the court upheld the state's election tribunal decision. It dismissed the appeal of Senator Abubakar Ohere of the All-Progressives Congress (APC). The court concurred with the arguments put forth by Joshua Usman, SAN, who represented Akpoti-Uduagan, acknowledging their merit.

Additionally, the appellate court imposed a fine of ₦500,000 against Senator Ohere. The Kogi State National and State Assemblies Tribunal had previously, on September 6, affirmed Akpoti-Uduagan as the rightful victor in the election and invalidated Senator Ohere's victory.

In delivering the unanimous verdict, Tribunal Chairman Justice K. A. Orjiako disclosed that Senator Ohere's vote totals had been inflated in nine polling units in the Ajaokuta Local Government Area. Furthermore, the Independent National Electoral Commission had adjusted Natasha's results in these areas while omitting the results of three other polling units meant for Natasha in the same LGA.

After these corrections, the court declared Natasha the election winner with 54,074 votes, surpassing Senator Ohere's 51,291 votes. However, Senator Ohere, dissatisfied with the outcome, approached the Court of Appeal to overturn the election results.

Nigeria Greater Than Your Ambition To Be President, APC Replies Atiku

The All-Progressives Congress (APC) has told the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, that Nigeria is greater than his unrealized ambition to be president.

Hours after the press briefing, the APC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the country has moved on.

It claimed that the PDP candidate had missed the opportunity to use his press conference to “redeem his prestige as an elder and statesman by rising above political pettiness and offering befitting congratulations to President Tinubu on his electoral victory.

The party added that rather than vindicate him, history will not forget Atiku’s unwillingness to put the country first and above his political ambition.

In a separate statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Atiku must now end what he described as an “unprofitable” bid to become the President of Nigeria.

Onanuga said there was no way Atiku and the PDP could have won the election with the party platform under which he contested, broken into four parts.

I Am Not Going Away, Atiku Says After Supreme Court Verdict On Tinubu

The Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25, 2023, presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has said he will not abandon partisan politics in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict that dismissed his petition and affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at a Press briefing in Abuja, the former Vice President promised to continue the struggle with other Nigerians to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku stated that though the apex court’s judgment is final, it leaves much to be desired.

Speaking further, he proposed an amendment to the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 to accommodate a six-year single term for a president for each of the six geopolitical zones.

He added that the law must mandate electronic voting and collation of results and compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to verify credentials submitted by candidates vying for political offices, amongst others.

Tinubu Pledges End To Reign Of Terror And Insecurity

President Bola Tinubu has to be interested in devolving internal security powers to the states to address insecurity in the country.

This was the view of Security Analyst Onyekachi Adekoya in an interview with Inspiration FM.

This charge is coming amid the rising spate of insecurity across the country. In Benue state, gunmen killed an octogenarian and former Chairman of Katsina-Ala and Ukum Local Government Area, Elder Washima Erukaa.

Also, at the weekend, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna in Niger State, Dr Sherifat Adefolalu, was found in a pool of blood with her throat slit and knives found beside her.

In Zamfara, bandits abducted the district head of Ruwan Rana in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of the State, Magaji Makau and five others.

While in Kwara, one person was killed and two others abducted when gunmen invaded Ora around 8 p.m. on Saturday.

For an effective security system in the country, Adekoya called for an investment in community-based security while noting that the federal system is overwhelmed.
