EFCC Fails To Produce Ex-CBN Governor In Defiance Of Court Order

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not bring the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to court on Monday, despite a Federal Capital Territory High Court order issued on Thursday.

The court had ordered the EFCC to either release Emefiele or produce him for a hearing on his bail motion.

During the court proceedings on Monday, the former CBN governor was noticeably absent. Emefiele's lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, accused the EFCC of disregarding the court order and highlighted that it had been 149 days since his client's detention.

In response, the EFCC's counsel, Farouk Abdullahi, acknowledged that the order had been served on the commission. However, he denied that Emefiele had spent over 100 days in their custody, asserting that the non-compliance with the order was not deliberate.

Justice Olusegun Adeniyi, the presiding judge, adjourned the matter to November 8, reiterating his previous order that the EFCC should either release Emefiele unconditionally or, as an alternative, produce him in court on the next adjourned date to consider bail.
