Betta Edu: I’m Not Involved In N438m Million Contract

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, has denied any involvement in the financial infractions in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The Minister was alleged to have received 438.1 million naira from the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Beta Edu, in the 3-billion-naira social register scam through a company, New Planet Project, which was alleged to be his own.

Though he admitted that he founded the company, Tunji Ojo said he resigned as a director in 2019 when he became a member of the House of Representatives.

Tinubu Suspends Betta Edu, Directs EFCC Chair To Conduct Probe

President Bola Tinubu immediately suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, from her position. The announcement came from the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement released Monday afternoon.

The president's decision to suspend Edu follows his order to investigate the ministry's affairs under her leadership thoroughly. The controversy arose from allegations surrounding Edu's approval of N585,198,500.00 to be disbursed into a personal account. A letter purportedly signed by the minister instructed the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer the sum to the account of Oniyelu Bridget as grants for vulnerable groups in four states. However, Madein clarified that her office received a payment request but did not take any action on it.

Edu, who, at 37, was the youngest member of the president's cabinet before her suspension, countered the allegations, claiming there were plans to tarnish her image, and she vehemently denied any intention to embezzle government funds. Coincidentally, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating Edu's predecessor, Sadiya Farouq, for alleged money laundering during her tenure as a minister under the administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement on Monday, the President directed the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, to thoroughly investigate all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and its affiliated agencies. The suspended minister was instructed to hand it over to the ministry's permanent secretary and cooperate fully with the investigating authorities during their inquiry.

Furthermore, the President appointed a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance to comprehensively diagnose the financial architecture and framework of social investment programs. The aim is to reform relevant institutions and programs, eliminate institutional frailties to benefit disadvantaged households, and restore public confidence in the initiative.

Resign For ‘Betraying Nigerians’, Falana Tells Edu

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has asked the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, to resign for “betraying the confidence reposed in her.”

In a statement, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to speed up the ongoing investigation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and charged all indicted persons to court.

The senior lawyer described as an “extremely embarrassing drama” the circumstances surrounding Edu’s alleged involvement in the approval of 585.19 million naira to be disbursed into a personal account.

Falana said the minister should stop insulting Nigerians, having admitted that she approved the funds to be paid to a private account instead of directly transferring them to the beneficiaries’ accounts from the ministry.

The senior lawyer criticized the minister for arrogantly saying that the N585.18 million fraud allegation is a mere fabrication by her detractors and an alleged attempt by mischief makers to undermine her ministry’s effort in fighting corruption and uplifting needy people.

He said it is crystal clear from the leaked memorandum of the Minister that the offence of an attempt to commit a felony has already been completed, adding that there can be no legal justification for the criminal diversion of the said sum.
