Ogun govt places N50m bounty for information on finance director’s killer

The Ogun State Government has declared a N50 million reward for information leading to the capture of Taiwo Oyekanmi’s assassins, the former director of finance and administration for the state.
On November 29, Oyekanmi, 51, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants as she drove across the Kuto Flyover Bridge in Abeokuta.

In a statement issued on Friday, Tokunbo Talabi, the Secretary to the State Government, announced the N50 million reward and urged the public to come forward with any information that could help with the investigation.

“On November 30, 2023 in Abeokuta, the state’s Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, was killed. The Ogun State Government has established a reward of N50 million for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the killers,” Talabi stated.

Talabi included everything. “All supplied information will be handled in the strictest confidence.”

Additionally, he provided a number of phone numbers 08037441955, 08033074371, 08081775020, 08034062773, and 08032136765, where people can leave tips.

As Oyekanmi and the other two were making their way back to the governor’s office, they were allegedly ambushed by armed men. They had recently taken money out of two of Abeokuta’s biggest commercial banks. It’s still unknown why the attack occurred and how much money was taken out.

PDP, NNPP And Five Others Form Coalition

On Wednesday, a new coalition of seven opposition political parties was established to fortify democracy in the country. Known as the Coalition of Concerned Political Parties, the movement was inaugurated in Abuja during a meeting attended by leaders of the political parties at the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party.

The coalition comprises the People’s Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Social Democratic Party, Peoples Allied Movement, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Young Progressives Party, and Zenith Labour Party. This development follows concerns raised by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, during a meeting with the Inter-party Advisory Council in November. Atiku expressed apprehension about the country becoming a one-party state, calling for unity among opposition forces.

Expressing unease about the prevailing instability in the country, the coalition urged the judicial system to safeguard Nigeria's democracy and free itself from political and executive interference. Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the SDP, emphasized the judiciary's critical role, stating, "The judiciary is the last hope of the common man if it still stands." He called on the judiciary to exercise caution in its decisions, especially in recent developments in states like Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kano, and Plateau.

Gabam stressed that the coalition focuses not on a merger or opposition to the Inter-Party Advisory Council. Speaking on behalf of the PDP, Setonji Koshoedo, the acting national secretary, highlighted that the coalition aims to provide a robust opposition force.

Echoing these sentiments, Chief Ralph Nwosu, the national chairman of the ADC, explained that the coalition seeks to strengthen democracy in the face of attempts to stifle viable opposition by those in government. The coalition emphasizes the importance of a judiciary that delivers internationally recognized judgments free from political influence.

Court Freezes 24 Kano Govt Accounts Over N30bn Compensation Dispute

Recently, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a garnishee order, effectively freezing 24 bank accounts associated with the Kano State Government.

This legal action stems from a suit filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Masalachi Eid Shop Owners and Traders Association, seeking redress for their shops' perceived illegitimate and unjust demolition.

Presiding over the case, Justice I. E. Ekwo delivered the ruling on November 28, 2023, confirming the attachment of funds amounting to N30 billion. The Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling, signed by Registrar Chioma Chijioke, highlights the court's intent to satisfy the judgment favouring the shop owners in response to the alleged unlawful demolition carried out by the state in June 2023.

In the court order, Justice Ekwo explicitly stated, "A garnishee order Nisi is at this moment made attaching the funds (present and future) of Kano State Government, Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), and the Attorney General of Kano State to the tune of N30 billion in satisfaction of the judgment."

Furthermore, the court has mandated the garnishees to appear before it and present any justifiable reasons against the order of Nisi becoming absolute. The judge specified that the judgment creditors must serve the defendants and garnishees at least 14 days before the next hearing, scheduled for January 18, 2024.

This ruling follows a prior judgment by the Federal High Court in Kano, where the shop owners were awarded N30 billion as compensation for the demolition of their shops. The affected accounts, encompassing 24 banks, are now subject to the freezing order.

He called for all feasible steps to prevent future occurrences and to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
