Supreme Court Set To Deliver Judgements In Kano, Plateau, Six Gov Disputes

Governors from Plateau, Bauchi, Kano, and Zamfara states have assembled at the Supreme Court in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, where the apex court is set to render verdicts on governorship election disputes involving at least eight sitting governors who were elected in March and inaugurated on May 29, 2023.

Seated in the courtroom are Governors Abba Yusuf (Kano), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), accompanied by their legal representatives. As they await the arrival of the justices, the courtroom is already filled with anticipation from a diverse audience.

Former Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, is also present in the courtroom. Ebonyi State, represented by Governor Francis Nwifuru, is on the cause list, but Nasarawa State is notably absent.

Journalists and accredited political party leaders have filled the courtroom, creating an atmosphere of heightened expectancy. The states under scrutiny for their governors' fates include Kano, Plateau, Bauchi, Cross River, Abia, Zamfara, Cross River, and Ebonyi.

The panel of justices, led by Justice John Okoro, has been expanded to eight members. The justices have now arrived and commenced proceedings.

The first judgment pertains to Lagos State, with Justice Garba Lawal preparing to read the lead judgment. The constitutionally mandated seven-man panel is supplemented by an additional member who will deliver their judgment in due course.

Supreme Court Affirms Umo Eno As Akwa Ibom Governor

The Supreme Court has upheld the election victory of Umo Eno from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected governor of Akwa Ibom State. The court dismissed the appeals by three parties challenging the outcome of the March 18, 2023, election.

The apex court panel, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, rejected the appeals filed by the All-Progressives Congress (APC), the Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the Action Alliance (AC). The dismissal was based on the grounds of the non-qualification of the governor, who faced allegations of certificate forgery—allegations vehemently denied by the governor.

The Court of Appeal had previously affirmed the judgment dismissing a suit challenging the primary that selected Umo Eno as the PDP candidate for the state. The appellant, Okon, had sought the disqualification of Eno, claiming that he had forged a West African Examination Certificate (WAEC), which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the election.

The appellate court, however, dismissed the suit, deeming it lacking in merit, and imposed a fine of 15 million naira against the plaintiff. The judge determined that Okon's arguments were speculative and failed to substantiate the claim that Eno's certificates were forged. As a result, the Supreme Court, in its recent decision, affirmed Eno's election victory, ending the legal challenges the opposing parties posed.
